Buying Points from an owner?

I/We love Disney! All together we have visited 8 times (9 is this Feb). In the past we have looked at becoming Vacation Club Members but decided against it for fear of being locked into something. This past year some good friends of ours went to Disney with VCers. After their return they informed us about buying points from VCers. They have done it once already and we are going to Disney with them in Feb and are doing it then. I am a newbie at it and have no idea how it works or where to start. We are thinking of taking our girls in May, priced the trip going through Disney Travel, priced it separately and now want to see how we would do with DVC. Our friends would give us the ins and outs but I hate to have them go through the trouble when I should learn it myself. Can anyone help me?

You also need to find out if there is anything available. We are at the less than 4 month mark, and there could be very little available at this point.
