Buying into DVC

About a year ago I chose to sell my DVC interest at BWV. It was a very good idea at the time because of substantive life changes and the number of points I had.

However, I'm getting the DVC itch again. I have no desire to buy the 160 point Disney minimum, as that is far more than I need at this point in my life. However, 50 points sounds just about right...

My questions for those far more experienced in these things than I...

1) How much does it matter where I book my points? I understand the 7 mo and 11 mo window, but I generally tend to travel at off-peak times and didn't have a problem booking at 7 mos previously.

I do love the standard views at BWV, but if I'm only going every other year or so...do I really *need* BWV points or could I get them from somewhere else?

2) After I do buy in, am I able to do additional buy ins through Disney for less than 160 points?

Thank you in advance for any advice y'all are able to offer.

What do you consider "off peak"? That might not be the "off peak" time for DVC.

If you want a standard view at BWV, you'll need to reserve at 11 months. So you'll need BWV points.

Currently, once you own DVC points and are a member, Disney will sell you any number of points, but I think 25 is the minimum.

We plan on usually traveling in early January.

When I had my interest before I was generally able to get standard views off of the wait list...but really good advice.

Thanks for the tip on buying from Disney after we're in, that's a great number of points for us to build from :D

The marathon takes up a lot of rooms, especially those around Epcot or on the monorail. It's usually the first weekend after Jan 1, but this year it's the second weekend.

And also, what do you mean by "a few years ago"? Right after 9/11 and for a couple of years after, reservations were fairly easy to get both at DVC and the regular resorts. People got really spooked about travel and vacations. As time passed, folks got over it and hotels got full again. If it's been that long, things have changed.

In addition, DVC has added a LOT more members in the past few years. While that doesn't mean a thing in your 11 month window, it could mean you are competing with a LOT more people at 7 months for that Standard View.

Ooh..very good point...

I think we need to decide just how much BWV means to us if we buy in anywhere else.

i was told that if you bought a small point amont we will say 50 then you then would have to buy enough to get you to the 160 point level before you could just buy say 25. You could always keep buying resale.

You were told incorrect. Once you are a member, DVC does not alter the requirements or rules based on how many points you have. You could have only 25 and then add on as little as 25 if you did so with cash.
