My DD had cataract surgery so she needs to wear bifocal lenses. Our optical insurance is horrible and I'm tried of spending $400+ a few times a year for new glasses for her (her prescription changes). Our health insurance will cover contact lenses for her as they consider them to be a prosthesis since her lenses were removed but they won't cover glasses even though they are much less than contacts would be (contacts are over $180 each and need to be replaced every few weeks).

My older DD has bought glasses from Zenni without any problems but they are single vision.

I'd love to hear from anyone that has bought "cheap" bifocal glasses.

Thanks!

How old is she? If your insurance will cover the contacts, is there a reason she can't wear them instead?

Glasses every couple of years is bad enough - but several times a year? Ouch!!

I haven't ordered glasses online before, so can't help with that, but have you looked at any discounts your regular health insurance may offer? I know my Blue Cross offered discounts at certain places. You could also look at getting Vision insurance for her privately. I have EyeMed and love it.

Another option may be to price out the cost of just getting new lenses instead of new glasses each time.

My DD lost the vision in one eye from a post-op strep pneumo infection (med negligence) so she is only able to see out of one eye. Because of this, her Ped Ophth insists that she wear glasses so that she has some protection over her good eye. She wore a contact for several years but had to wear glasses over it for the bifocal power. She also started to develop 'contact lens overwear' and we were told that she shouldn't wear the lens more than 8 hours a day.

DD is almost 16yo but she has a rare genetic disease so she is delayed both cognitively as well as physically. She's about the size of a 7yo. A frame usually lasts about 9months before it's broken. As her eyes grow, her prescription has decreased. She also wears hearing aides so we have to get her glasses with cable temples or bend the plastic temple to curl around her ear for them to stay on.

We have a BC/BS PPO but it's through the union that my DH belongs to. The union is self-insured and the only coverage for glasses that we have is through the optical plan. It covers a total of $110 for lenses and frames ever two years. The contact lens would be covered with the health insurance as a prosthesis since it goes directly on her eye but she would still need to wear glasses over it.

I will look at EyeMed and see. I don't know if they will cover her or not since she has a preexisting condition but I'm going to look into it.
Thanks!

I'm so sorry to hear this.. Sounds like the poor child has really been through the mill.. Since her "eye" condition actually is a result of a "medical" condition, won't your health ins. pick up the costs?

Hope you can find something affordable.. That's really rough..:(
