I just bought some peaches at my local Wegman's, and they were horrible. Usually Wegman's has very good produce. I let them ripen in a paper bag, and when I cut one and tasted it, it was mealy. They were all like that. 4 peaches, over $3 worth! I ended up throwing 2 of them out...I forced myself to eat the other two, but the kids wouldn't touch them. It just makes me mad that I spent that money on yucky fruit!!

So, when you buy fruit like this, do you chuck it and cut your losses, or do you return it? :confused3

If they were all bad I would definitely take them back.(but I'm pretty cheap...:lmao: ) I work for a local grocery store and we do returns on all items including fresh foods.

I've bought some green peppers at my local Wegmans. I cut them up like a day later and they were all bad inside.

I showed up with my peppers and my receipt and they not only gave me my two original peppers but gave me about 3-4 of each color!

This Wegmans is less than a mile from my house, so it really wasn't an issue of gas money or such.

I take bad fruit back to the store--our local grocery *wants* you to do this...they bend over backward to have great customer service. It is rare that I need to take fruit back, but I definitely have done it.

Oh no.....don't do this. You never ever do NOT give Wegman's a chance to make it right. That is one company that absolutely wants their customers happy and will make it right. Please take them back for the company's sake and yours and no I dont' work there or anything but they are truly a model company in my book.

You ate bad fruit?:scared1:

You knew it was bad, yet you ate it:eek:

Peaches have to go into the fridge! (according to my farmer friend with the peach farm) Leave them out in a bag and they go bad in about 2 days. Sorry sounds like your mistake here. Plus how much gas would you waste bringing them back? Cut your losses.

Hey did you hear about the guy that called 911 because subway forgot the mayo on his sub?:rotfl2:

Could it be you let it over ripen in the bag before consuming them?

If you still had some product to show them I would bring it back within 2-3 day of purchase. If not I would cut my losses.

I personally love Wegmans and I am not defending them but if it's really because you let it sit before getting around or a chance to eat it then it would be you loss not the store.

I've had this happen to peaches a few times. It has nothing to do with letting them sit out too long (then they would ripen first and go rotten). Sometimes, they just never ripen, then get yucky in a dry, tasteless way. I wouldn't put peaches into the fridge right away like someone suggested, because then they'll never ripen at all.

Anyhow, I'd return them. And btw, I've found nectarines to be a lot more reliable in the sense that I've never had them just go bad like that.

Once (on a Disney trip) I got some overripe plums from a "mom and pop" grocery store on 192. They looked OK from the outside but the skin was unusually thick so I didn't notice the yuckiness inside until I bit into one.

It is my belief that fruit should be removed from the bag and not put in a pile as soon as you get it home. Apples should not be piled with other fruits.

You'll probably need to use trial and error to find out how long to put fruit in the fridge to get it ripe exactly when you want it. I'm told that bananas should not be put in the fridge and no fruit should be kept in a hot room.

Nowadays I try not to buy fruit or produce from small non-air-conditioned stores.

It seems I am always returning stuff to our local grocery stores. With the price of groceries I don't just throw stuff away if it's bad.

Just last week my DH went grocery shopping and bought a large bottle of olive oil. It had this weird sticker on it and that prompted me to look at the expiration date. Guess what it was? February 2008. Yep, it expired 6 months ago! We still had the receipt so I returned it and got my $8 back.

I wouldn't take it back--unless I got home that day and saw that they were yucky or moldy. I think they overriped in the bag.

Del:)

They were not ripe when I bought them. In fact, the sign at Wegman's said ripe within 1-2 days, and they actually give you a brown paper bag to take and put the fruit in at home. I put them in the bag, and the next day they were ready (as per the instructions on the bag....they had a slight give when you put pressure on them). However, when I tasted them, they were mealy. As in dry in texture, flavorless....like the store refridgerated them before they were ripe. They weren't spoiled. They just weren't good. Peaches are supposed to be juicy and full of flavor. These were not.

THANK YOU!! Finally somebody who understands what I am talking about!!! I was beginning to think that nobody got what I was saying!!:rotfl2:

Nope...bought them, put them in the bag (provided by wegmans) to ripen them, ate one the next day. YUCK. They were all like that.

In seeing where you are from I think we are pretty close mileage wise- drive on over to nj and buy from a farmer! They are ripe when you buy them. I guess that is why he says INTO THE FRIDGE ASAP! And I have a few left from last week and they are still delicious!

Did you ever see the Seinfeld episode where Krammer tries to return a peach?:rotfl2: And then he gets banned from the market!

I would say something to the produce manager the next time I go into Wegmans.

I would take them back if it wasn't too far to drive or out of my way. I personally take stuff back if it's bad. Even if I have cut one open, or thrown one or two out, I have kept the receipt and taken back the rest and gotten refunds/exchanges on the original amount. Grocery stores expect to give refunds on bad fruits and veggies, it's just part of the business.

I know some people don't like to take stuff back, but you know, as a customer, I would not buy all that I buy if I knew I couldn't, or wouldn't take something that I purchased back if it were bad, esp. this day and age with the prices of groceries getting so high.

With fruit that happens. Sometimes I buy avacados that look perfect, that aren't ripe, aren't damaged or bruised, then when they are ready I cut them open and they are black inside. With fruits it's the same sometimes, sometimes they are bad when they ripen. It's not you fault, it's just what happens to perishable fruits and veggies, like all things, they are not all perfect ;)
