We are in the market for an Iphone of course 3Gs are cheaper even though I know 4G are newer. For those of you that are familiar with the two what would be the differences. Do you think I could go with the 3G?

I have a 3g and just bought the 4g for my hubby 2 weeks ago. They both do exactly the same thing. The 4g is a little faster and has a better camera. I love my iphone 3gs. I will not upgrade till I have to.

I think that it could work with the 3Gs. We got the first 3G, about a month before the 4G arrived. My iPhone has done well, however, we will be able to upgrade in January and dh and I want to upgrade to whatever will be "the one" at that time. We did not think that we would like it as much as we do, but we really do like it.

So I say go for it.. no matter which one you choose, you will make a good choice.

I hope that helps some ;)

I upgraded from a 3GS to a 4 and gave my 3GS to a friend. Cripes do I wish I had my old phone back. The reception on the iPhone 4 stinks.

I have a 3GS (almost 2 yrs old) and DH has a 4. Differences are:

4 seems to have slightly better battery life
4 has much better camera and display
4 has both front and rear cameras, so you can do video calls. 3 has only the rear camera.

Other than that, my 3 works just fine --- but I can't wait until the 5 comes out to upgrade!

Also, you can only take videos on the iPhone 4, not the 3.

We hav 3GS (16GB) phones and we love them.

I am a hobby photographer and the camera, for me, is great. My DH took an incredible picture from a plane recently - I chuckle when I hear the camera is better on the 4 because most of what makes a picture is the photographer anyway. If you can take a nice picture with a 4 you can also get it with a 3. :thumbsup2

My 3GS takes great video also.

If I were you, I would wait a few weeks. The iPhone 5 is rumored to be released sometime in September.

Ditto that - I'm waiting on it! With every release things are improved, that's all I can say since I don't have an iPhone yet, I've only been doing the research to get one since earlier this year. I have a friend who couldn't live w/o hers and I'm definitely jealous!

Another thing - nobody at the stores will tell you when the next one is coming out because then nobody would buy the ones in the stores now. But the rumors are out there that the new one will be out in September, or at the latest October.

My 3GS takes what I would call ok photos -- but they generally seem to be too dim for my taste. I just use it for snapshots and facebook photos, anyway. It does take video....

This is what I would do...
The 3gs is a great phone. I have had mine for a couple years...a 16gb. I am just about out of space on it.
The $50 deal for the 3gs now if for an 8gb phone, and I think that's all that's out there right now.

Once you get into this, you may find you want your music library with you, and maybe a movie for the kids, and hmmmmmmm there are so many apps that we just MUST have!

The 4 is outdated at almost 15months old.

I'd wait if you have phones to hold you over...

The 5G is coming out within a couple of months. Wait if you can, because the price on the 4G will drop dramatically.

I can't comment on the differences in the 3G and 4G, since I've only owned the latter of the two.

FYI - people who work in the stores have to sign a confidentiality agreement. To discuss dates is an easy way to get fired.

DH and I both have the 3G. I bought mine right before 4G was released. DH got his just last month, knowing the differences between the two models.

Sure, it might be novel to video chat with someone, but other than that, we are very happy with the 3G, and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon.

I don;t ever recommend a 27 month old piece of technology, EVER! Yes, the 3Gs is a nice phone and is most likely better than what you have, but with cell phone contracts you have to keep it for 2 years. So in 2 years when that contract is up you will have a 4+ year old phone. At that point will it be able to do what you want it to do, can you get support for the product, will you be able to find a case that fits, etc?

IMHO, wait a few weeks for all of these iPhone 5 rumors to die down. If there is going to be a new phone, the 4 price will drop.

The 4 has the front facing camera. That is the biggest difference I have found so far, well that and shape. LOL I used my 3gs for 2 years and never had a problem. I got the 4 because I switched to Verizon who doesn't have a 3gs option. I am actually ebaying my 3gs right now. :)

Just so you know it is an iPhone4 not an iPhone4G. I wouldn't want someone to buy the iPhone4 thinking they are getting a 4G compatible phone when it is not.

I have a 3G, no video though (you can download 3rd party video APPS but haven't found one I can call decent), however 3GS I believe has video capability.

Also the new OS that's coming out will only be compatible with 3GS and above, not 3G, either wait until the 5G comes out or look into a refurb 3GS or 4G. I plan to upgrade to the 5G when it comes out as long as there is no significant issues like they had with the 4G when it first came out.
