I travel alot of miles withe my children taking my elsdest DS to Galas and training sessions all over the country, and we would love to buy a portable DVD player to keep them amused in the car, but they are so expensive here, I was looking on the Walmart website recently and couldnot believe how cheap they are in the states, other than the fact that they would play a different regions dvd's can anyone think of any other reason why one would not work here in the UK ( we are hoping to either buy a multi region or making it multiregion with a code from the internet like we did with our houshold dvd player)

Hi.....we bought an Audiovox D1730 from Costco ($300) in Orlando last October.

It has a 7.5 inch screen, a car cigar lighter connector and rechargeable battery pack. It plays Region 1 DVDs as well as VCDs and SVCDs which I burn myself (no regionality problems with these). It does not play Region 2 DVDs and I've been looking for a hack everywhere, to no avail. There are some claimed hacks on the net but these seemed to relate to an earlier model, as the button codes do not appear on my remote control. I suspect that a useable hack will be posted at some point in time.

I've had to buy a step up transformer to use whilst connected to the UK mains supply. The car cigar lighter connector works well and I am well satisfied with this purchase:D

I checked out the prices in Walmart and K Mart whilst there. Walmart prices were far superior, but were beaten by Costco. Also, there was no sign that the Walmart portables played VCDs/SVCDs.

The only thing I can say is to check it runs on various voltages for ordinary viewing and charging of the battery etc whilst at home.
DH bought me a portable DVD player widescreen for Christmas and it is a make I have not heard of before now, but gets good reviews in magazines and it wasn't as expensive as say a Panasonic AFAIK!! It has a good picture and at the moment plays region 2 discs but think it can be changed to multi region ;)
If you need more details I shall dig them out.
Claire :)

Thanks alot for your replies, I definatly think that I will check them out whilst at WDW, I really only want it for use in the car on long journeys when the children get bored, it certainly would be well used as we seem to have some sort of event on every weekend for the forseeable future.

Hi

2 things you have to be careful of is

1 If it is locked to region 1 it will not play Uk region 2 disks.
Some players can be made to play all regions but do not count on it.

2 Make sure it have a multi voltage transformer to work in other countries.

A few other things to think of are customs. Will it still be cheaper if you get caught at customs and what do you do it it goes wrong. does it have a worldwide warranty.

I was tempted to buy one it Florida but decided against it because of the above.

They are becoming cheaper and cheaper in the Uk and you can get one for under £200 in many places in the high street and cheaper also on the net.

Hope this helps. ;) ;)

Thanks Mike230652, DH says that there is one of these shops near to where he works and he is going to go take a look , that is certainly an excellent price for a multi region portable DVD
