Buying a new heat pump-gas or electric?

Our heat pump is well over 20 years old and the heat part is finally going out. We have two different heat and air companies coming next week for estimates. I live in the country but about a year ago a gas line literally went through our front and side yard. We didn't hook up then, but it would be no problem to do so. I know that gas is currently high but DH and I are thinking about heating with gas instead of electricity. Electricity is all we have ever used. I understand that gas is a "hotter" heat. That is all that would be gas. Our air, water heater, stove would still be electric. I would appreciate any imput that anyone can give me. Thanks.

Historically it's been cheaper to heat with gas than electrical. That said however I wasn't aware that heat pumps worked with anything other than electricity. If that is still a true statement than your choices are really between hot air furnace or hot water boiler if you want to convert to gas fired heating system.

Just curious where you live. Here in the Northeast heat pumps are rarely used because they just don't keep it warm enough for most people.

I also am not sure if there is such a thing as a gas heat pump! We had a heat pump at our old house and have gas heat now. Gas heat is warmer and better. Can't really speak to price b/c our new house is a lot bigger, so, of course, it costs more to heat it.

If you're getting a new furnace, I recommend gas. When your hot water heater gives out, go with gas there, too -- now, that is really a big difference. So efficicent and so much hot water so quickly.

We have an electric heat pump and I hate it! It is so dry, and I never feel really warmed up in the coldest of winter!

If you can go gas, do it! It really is a more comforting heat.

My next home will have gas heat, or I'm not living in it!
