Buying a golf cart

We just bought a Toy Hauler for two reasons -- two big dogs and a golf cart. We just started looking around at golf carts. Supply around here (SE La.) is very low due to all of the carts lost during the hurricane last year.

Any tips on buying a golf cart? Should we expect a discount (like a car or rv)? Anybody have any luck buying one online?

Thanks!

We bought a used 1996 Yamaha 36 volt cart last year. We purchased from a couple of guys that buy them from golf courses as they get new ones. We got very lucky to get one used by the Range Officials so it was in very good shape and not all beat up. The guys I bought from told me the single biggest issue were the batteries. The ones in my Yamaha are exactly like the ones in my Coach and I can buy those at Sam's. They did let us drive it around their yard so I could hear it run and feel how the steering felt. We have had no trouble with it so far. Good Luck.

Thanks, Brad. If I may ask -- did you pay the "sticker" price for it -- or is it like a car or rv where the sticker price is not the real price?

After making our first trip to Ft. Wilderness without a golf cart with more trips planned in the future, I have my wife convinced that we need to buy a golf cart. I'd like to know the pros and cons of new vs. used. Used is more in our budget after purchasing a new Airstream, but I'd like it customized so new may be the only way.

We bought a used 1986 Club Car in pretty bad shape. DH restores old Mustangs and is now turning this old cart into a "show cart" !!!!! He has torn it apart and is in "restoration heaven" !!! Buying parts on e-bay, fabricating parts he can't find, getting ready to paint it red (my favorite color). He is even going to make a special seat for Princess Hollie the Yorkie. If you are handy, used is the way to go for customization. But it will get expensive if you can't do the work yourself.

Buy used. They sell them after 3-4 years and you can usually get one around here for 800-1000.

Is that from the golf courses? and do they ever have 4 seaters?

There are places here that have contracts with golf courses. They buy the lots from them and sell them new ones. The place we bought ours from had hundreds. He said, here's a key, go find the one you want. I drove it up to the front, he said, you want a basket for the back or a seat conversion, I bought the seat conversion for 400.00. Worth it.

WOW, that's great we have been looking for a used golf cart for about 3 months now, we can't seem to find anything under 1700.00 $, and that one was almost trashed, if anyone around my area knows of a good deal, give me a heads up...please.

The problem here is supply. A used 2003 goes for $2800 here. Add $400 for a rear seat, $200 for headlights and tail lights.

We are now thinking of going up to 300 miles away to buy one. We'll just make a camping trip out of it. We just have to find someplace to buy from!

We saw a new one at the lot that was customized. It was nice -- $8000.

You wouldn't happen to be within 300 miles of New Orleans, would you?

Yes, where do you live!

In our area there are a lot of Delta people living in a community where all of the neighborhoods are connected with cart paths (89 miles I believe) but the cheapest I have found is $1500 for a 1990 Club Car. There was a 1995 E-Z Go for $1300 because of moving but when I called the number was disconnected. I thought with so many Delta people out of work there would be tons, but only 4 in our local paper this week.

I bought my '96 Yamaha just over a year ago for $2500 and as I said it was very clean. As part of the deal I got them to put on a rear seat that flips over and makes a diamond plate aluminum flat cargo bed. These guys had several carts in various conditions and even some customized ones which were very expensive. I think it is a better idea to buy from a surplus dealer rather then an individual or a golf course. Most surplus dealers recondition them to some degree and will usually service them down the road, too.

Our local dealer just got two 2003 electric carts in. I went over and looked at them and we decided to get one. Of course, we had to tell her what options we wanted and it will take them about a week to build it. The only think I don't like about it is the price but as I said before the supply is very low here.
