Buy tickets now for a 2017 trip?

I wanted to see what you guys thought of this plan...

So we are planning on taking a late Feb/Mar 2017 trip next year- I have the dates picked out and know we want 5 days in the parks without any add ons. With the rumors that ticket prices are going to increase should we think about buying tickets now?

We will rent DVC points so a sale on packages with the hotel, dining, and tickets wouldn't affect us

My concerns are
- are the prices even going up (or going up enough that it makes sense to do this)?
- if someone in our party isn't able to go, can we just save their ticket for the next trip (likely in 2019)

Well, I am the type who does this. Before the non-expiring tickets went off the market I bought an extra 10 day one for my DH and I, so we each have 17 days worth of park tickets to use over several short trips. Yes you can save a ticket to use in the future. I would do this only if you are sure they will eventually get used, and can afford to tie up the money that long. There is a little concern about the possibility of tiered tickets coming, that there could be a surcharge for certain days/time of year.

Like georgina, I also purchase tickets ahead of time in order to stay ahead of price increases. But we own DVC. Someone in our family is likely to visit Disney in the future, so it's worth it for us.

I would not purchase tickets far in advance if I was not positive that there would be a Disney trip in the future. And I definitely would not sink money into tickets if I didn't have an adequate emergency fund in place. Disney tickets are pretty worthless to the mortgage bank or the utility company. Cash will always be king.

I knew we were going back eventually. So in 2015, I bought 6 day tickets. Trip is now planned for April 2017.

I bought our tickets for our June 2016 trip in February of 2015. As FirstDown mentioned, they are good until you actually start to use them (so if you don't use a ticket, you can carry it over). So, if you find yourself in the position to buy them ahead of time, you'll save some money.

I just ordered a couple of 5-day base tickets for future trips.
Didn't Disney raise ticket prices about this time last year?

I did just buy the first week of this feb for spring 2017 trip. I was buying from disney and using rewards points. Since disney already charges more than undercovertourist, I did not want to pay the increase too.

I bought some yesterday. We have a couple of 10 day tickets we bought several years ago, and now added two 5 day tickets. Planning a trip for Halloween 2017 for us, adult DD and a friend. We own DVC, and I look at it as putting a trip on "layaway". Sometime in the next year, we will buy some Universal 2 day tickets.

Thanks to everyone discussing the rumors about ticket pricing changes, I, too, pulled the trigger on our Thanksgiving trip a couple days ago. Checking now, looks like we saved a little over $100.

I may have actually spoke too soon. Just checked the special DVC ticket link and the prices of those tickets are still showing the "old" price with the free day included. This deal expires March 31, so it'll be interesting to see if this is a glitch or intended. Interesting.

I just checked and they are still the old prices as of 9 PM. The price of a 7-day hopper with the free day and free WPF&M is the same price on the DVC link as the new price of a 4-day hopper.

I was glad to see that they held off on the surge pricing for all but 1-day tickets. I guess that it will be a matter of time before all of the tickets will be.

Since it is normally possible to add more days onto tickets, Could we add on days to those, making those additional purchased days also non-expiring? If so, would this have to be done while on WDW property?

1. In order to be able to "upgrade a ticket to more days, there has to be an equivalent ticket with more days available on the ticket menu. There are no "no-expiry" tickets available to purchase. Disney did away with that option a little over a year ago.
2. You could only upgrade to a maximum of 10 days total on the pass. IOW, you could add 3 more days to a pass that originally had 7 days on it but a 10-day pass could not be upgraded to more days unless it was upgraded to an AP.
   
3. And probably most importantly -all ticket upgrades need to be done within 14 days of the first day of use. Your tickets were first used quite some time ago.
