I'm glad I found this board!

Our family loves to vacation at Disney so we've been curious about buying into DVC. Our most recent trip was to Disneyland, however, and we've decided it's just as nice to vacation there as it is to vacation at WDW. I'd imagine we'll be doing Disney almost yearly now, but it is much more convenient to vacation at Disneyland. I'd guess we'd do two or three trips to DL for every one trip to WDW. I've been trying to find the point conversions on Studios and GVs at the Disneyland hotels to see if buying DVC points would be beneficial, but I'm having difficulty using the calculator I can find on this forum. (It will only let me price a standard room, not the studios and GVs.)

What do y'all think? Would it be a waste of points to use them at Disneyland? What if I bought DVC and used them every three years and rented them out the other two? What are the prospects of DVC opening at Disneyland?

Thanks, in advance, for opinions on the matter.

I'm not sure i completely understand what you are asking, but I'll give it a shot First of all, there are no studio and GV ponts for Disneyland hotels, because there are not currently any DVC resorts in Disneyland. Regular hotels would not have GVs.

If you are talking about buying DVC to use mostly at Disneyland and only every three years at WDW, then, I would reccomend that you buy a smaller amount of points, bank one year and borrow the next and do an every 3rd year trip to WDW that way. You could then pay cash for your Disneyland stays. It really isn't cost effective to buy DVC and usually stay at off site trades like Disneyland.

As for DVC opening in California....It has been a rumor for quite awhile, but there is no way to know if or when DVC might build a resort there. I suspect they are testing the waters to know if it would make sense.

Diane,

Right . . . my mistake. When I typed "studio" I meant "suite" which is completely different. PPH offers 1BR and 2BR suites while GCH and DLH both offer 1,2 and 3BR suites. I was looking at the DVC point calculator (online) to calculate the cost in DVC points for stays at the previously mentioned hotels and couldn't pull up costs for the suites, only the standard rooms. While doing so, it showed the option of GV, it just wouldn't let me access the point charge. I had assumed they didn't have GVs, but hoped I was wrong.

I get the "buy 1/3 the points you'd need and use every three years" idea. I hadn't even thought of banking and borrowing to make DVC more logical for us.

Thanks!

Today, I would say base your decision on how often you will go to WDW, because using points at DL requires alot of points.

However, word on the stree is that there could be DVC at DL in the not too distant future.....

If you are renting points annually for the forseeable future, then you should really buy. Its just like real estate, rent the condo or own it?

There's a link to the point charts for the Disneyland resorts in this thread:

It really isn't cost effective to use points for anything other than the DVC resorts. Keep in mind that the points required to stay at the non-DVC resorts can (and do) increase almost every year. This year, due to the 50th celebration, DVC reduced the points required to stay at the DLH and the GC, but I wouldn't expect that to happen again for a long while.

Carol,

Thanks for the link. It appears to only show the standard rooms and not the suites, which is what my family of five needs. But, when I compare the points needed for a DL standard room to a DVC studio, I see that DL costs about twice the points. I can only imagine what the point cost would be for more spacious accommodations. It is clear to me now that I shouldn't buy DVC points with the intention to use them at DL. With the help of this board, I think I'm leaning towards buying a small amount of points resale and borrowing and banking to make a DVC vacation every three years. Then, in between, we'll vacation to DL with cash. Now I just need to decide where in WDW I want to call home.

Thanks to all for your input!

That makes better economic sense, LOL. You can always add on to your membership if DVC decides to build a DVC resort at Disneyland. Many here are hoping that they will.

Best wishes -
