Buy or Make Magnets

Hey! My family is going on our first Disney Cruise in 2 weeks on the Fantasy. We noticed and saw many pictures of beautiful magnets on the cruise doors.

It looks like many families make their magnets. My problem is that I might not have time to do so. Our inkjet printer needs to be replaced. I wonder if I can find one of the free magnets and have some retail store make them. Again, I'm stressed out trying to get me ,my husband, daughter and parents ready. We fly to Disney World before the cruise too.

Is their a recommended store to purchase magnets from? Can they put names on them are do Minnie and Mickey ears?

I am guessing the doors are metallic and magnets will stick to them. Our staterooms are on the deck 7.

Please help me with suggestions!

Thanks!
Ginger

You could try ETSY, but you have a pretty short time window. Good luck and have a great time!

if you take the images to staples they can print them on cardstock and then you can buy the magnet backing and stick it on the back so it's not too much work. In the picture DH printed the ones around our state room numbers at work with a higher quality printer and then I had staples laminate them and then I got the magnet backing that is like a sticker and cut it to fit the back. The mickey/minnie heads I cut out all the pieces and glued them together and then had them laminated at staples and then did the magnet backing myself. Make sure you test out the magnets at home first, our first cruise I didn't do that and some of the magnets weren't strong enough(like the ones that are strips that come rolled up) so I was disappointed, this past time I made sure to test them out on frig first. Happy cruising!

It's fun to have magnets, but I would suggest not letting yourself get stressed about it. It is certainly not a requirement. There are plenty of doors with no magnets. Also, they sell some on the ship. I didn't look at the price, but guessing not cheap.

If you really don't want an unadorned personalized door, maybe suggest your DD draw a picture and then use cheap refrig magnets to hold to the door?

If you have time make the magnets but if not, then don't stress. I don't think it's something worthwhile to purchase. You can also be creative and put up pictures that your kids drew and colored and just add magnets to the back - making it unique for your family. You can buy magnet rolls from Walmart for like $3 or $4.

You can also buy stateroom magnet kits onboard. Pricier than doig it yourself but sometimes it's worth it! I can't remember the price but I think they were around $20? And a few different types too.

I have found some Disney themed cut-outs in the scrap booking section of Hobby Lobby. I just add magnets.

Helpful Hint: If you find something that is sticky, add a very small amount of baby powder to the adhesive and it disappears like magic. Then just add a magnet.

I printed our "magnets" out on picture paper and then attached a "business card magnet" (http://www.staples.ca/en/Staples-Business-Card-Magnets-100-Pack/product_26721_2-CA_1_20001) to the back.

You could print onto cardstock or photo paper and make it work easily.

Also, while at WDW you could get a few postcards and then on ship stick the business card magnet on 'em and voila, decoration :-)

Disney-themed stickers (think WalMart) can be put on photo paper or cardstock.

I also used the business card magnets. They work great. We even cut them in half for some of our smaller pictures and had no problems.

I bought round magnets on Amazon and hot glued them on the back of things I made. I found magnetic "tape" was not strong enough to hold to the doors. I have not tried business card magnets. Onboard ready mades were about $20.

We were on a 14 night cruise, so I decided to change the "theme" of our door to match that day's theme. This would have been way too expensive to pay someone to do, so I simply searched for "DISigns" on the internet that were free. I copy and pasted them to a 8.5x11 size word document and then sent them off to Staples to be printed on cardstock in color. They came out great. I picked them up, cut them out (laminated them because I have a laminator) and then glued rare earth magnets to all of them. It took a few hours tops, and I made 75+ magnets. There are even people on this board that will personalize the designs for you for free...let me see if I can find the link for you.

one of the nice things with the business card magnets is they are self adhesive -- pull the protective backing off and just stick it to the back of whatever you want to hang. they can also be cut to a smaller size for a smaller item.

You can also buy 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of printable magnetic paper. Just load into your printer and print away! There are a couple of threads on this cruise forum that will do the design for you for free. All you have to do is print them and cut them out! Super easy!

I just ordered some from Etsy. You can message the shop owner before ordering and ask if you can get them in time. There are many shops on Etsy that offer these.

My wonderful sister made me some magnets. She had a lamination machine and created some nice magnets. Will look great on the door! Take you for your suggestions. I did checked out several of the Etsy shops. You can get a decent amount of magnets for under $25.

I ended up spending $0!

Don't spend too much money, sadly they frequently get stolen off of doors

Don't spend too much money, sadly they frequently get stolen off of doors

Seriously?! :sad2: Has anyone ever experienced this first hand? I'd be so pissed. I'm already mentally planning our doors and just..ugh. All I can say is if they steal our stuff they best not have the nerve to put it on their door and let me see it.

I have heard about it numerous times. And I was very surprised that it happened to us on our Alaskan cruise this summer. We called guest services and they put what they considered to be some replacement magnets on my door, but clearly not as nice as the one's that were stolen

We are going on our 7th Disney Cruise and have never had any magnets stolen. I think the trick to not having them stolen is to make sure they are personalized with at least your name. Even if you buy the ones on the ship, I would bring a sharpie and write your name on them, even if it's just on a corner.
