Buy a seat or lap child on flight for 1yo. Struggling!

Hey all! Every time we traveled in the past w/ just DD we always bought her a seat. Now, having to buy 4 seats is killing me. BUT, I'm really struggling with the idea of holding DS1 in our laps. It will be me & DH tag teaming. He doesn't want me to buy DS a seat. But, I'm struggling. I know he's safer in his car seat.

Can you give me your experiences? Have you traveled w/ lap kids? How did it go? Any tips?

We never bought a seat for our two when they could be held in the lap. Never had an issue. We would just pass them back and forth or let them stand for a bit. Granted, our flights were usually less than 2 hours so that helped a bit.

You are a family of 4 and one can be held. Is your other child younger/smaller? If so, put up the armrest between your seats and you can spread out a bit and plop the little one down. That's what we did. We also had one person hold them on the way down (or on each leg of flight down) and then the other person held them on the way back.

DD is 4 now, so she's def not an issue. We're flying from NY so the flight is a bit under 3 hours (barring any delays of course. :scared1:)

My girlfriend never bought a seat for her LO's either. I'm sure he'll be fine.

I'm thinking of buying that harness thingy that attaches DS to my seat belt. I know you can't use it for taxi/takeoff/landing, but I'm worried about turbulence. I saw this video where the plane dropped a few hundred feet and the kid flew up & hit his head on the ceiling. It was a re-creation but it was scary!!

I have three kids, and they were all lap babies until they were two. We never had a problem. The oldest even flew to Alaska.

I agree with other posters, my kids have all always flown as lap babies until they were 2. Never any issues for us.

DS flew as a lap baby at 18 mths, and did fine. I figured he was going to want to be in my lap anyway. The flight was under-booked, so we did get to spread out a bit, too.

My kids always flew on my lap until they were 2. Our last trip was a struggle as dd was 23 months and ds was 9 months. I should have bought her a seat on that flight but we still did fine.

I have done both when my kiddos were small. On longer flights it was easier to have their own carseats with us because they knew that it meant they had to stay in their seat (like in the car). I found that once they were mobile they were really squirmy and hard to keep contained without their carseat. Usually when we were flying shorter trips I would hold them on my lap...as pp said, if your 4 y.o. is small, they could probably "share" a seat. The other thing is that we would sometimes luck out and if the flight wasn't full, we would actually have a seat for the baby. If your 1 y.o. will gladly be held for 3 hours, then do the lap thing...if not, then definitely spend the money. It could be a LONG 3 hours!!

DD was a lap baby at 14 months, and she'll be a lap baby again at 22 months. Luckily our flights aren't that long, but DD was very good on both flights. I just am afraid to put her into a carseat (in public, esp. on a plane) because she freaks out almost every time we put her into the carseat, it's like we're putting her into a medieval torture device. It's NOT pretty. Next time we go, she'll need her own seat/ticket, so we won't have that choice.

DO what you're comfortable doing. I dont think the airlines would *let* you fly with a lap baby if it were really that unsafe. Could you imagine the lawsuits? It's not like car seats in cars-- that's not optional for a reason!

We always bought our children seats. Their safety just doesnt have a price. Do the research, there's just no question, imho. Additionally everyone will be much mroe comfortable.

ditto there is no way i would ever fly with a child on my lap, and from what i have read they are trying to make it illegal to rode with a lap child. A runway accident or turbulence is just like a car crash. when we fly my 4yr old will be in her carseat and my just turned 2 yr old will be in his. I would find it very difficult to hold a child the entire flight, at 1 my kids always wanted down.

I would make that call based on your child's temperament. If you have a VERY easygoing 1 year old, who will be content to sit on your lap for 3 hours, then go ahead and do "lap baby". However, if your baby is at that age where he's starting to throw tantrums or get antsy if he sits too long, I'd really strongly consider buying a seat and bringing a carseat. Sure, it's a pain to lug the carseat around the airport and stuff, but for a 3 hour flight? Think about that. What if the baby wants to fall asleep? Who's going to hold the baby for 3 hours? What if you or DH needs to get up to use the bathroom? What about your own comfort on the flight? I don't know about you, but I don't find it overly comfortably on ANY plane, let alone having to sit and hold a squirmy 1 year old for 3 hours. By the time I landed, I'd need a couple glasses of wine and a massage. :lmao:

How much is your sanity worth if your child decides to throw a MAJOR tantrum at takeoff time and doesn't "feel" like sitting nicely in your lap? I was on a flight yesterday with a "lovely" 1.5 year old boy who pulled this on his mother, who did NOT buy a seat on a COMPLETELY full flight. I swear, that kid sounded like he was demon possessed. The flight crew was *this* close to pulling her off the flight because the kid was completely out of control and would not sit down (he was literally crawling UP his mother's chest and trying to go over the seat back).

Know your child, and make a decision based on how you think he will do. We just took our children on their first plane ride this past weekend. Our boys are 4.5 and 3. We had a feeling (based on his temperament) that our 3 year old *might* throw a major tantrum and NOT sit nicely on the seat with the seatbelt at takeoff/landing time, so we lugged the stupid 20lb carseat through the airport, along with 2 strollers, even though he is plenty old enough to just sit in the seat without a carseat. Turns out, he was a complete angel, BUT he fell asleep on the return flight home, and had he NOT had the carseat, his head would have been flopping around everywhere and he wouldn't have been able to sleep at all (our 4.5 y/o also fell asleep, and I had to brace his head with my arm for the whole flight...which wasn't very comfy for me). I didn't anticipate the older one falling asleep, since he hasn't taken naps since he was 2...but I DID anticipate the little one napping, which is why we STILL brought the carseat on the return flight, even though we knew he would sit nicely on the plane seat without it.

You gotta anticipate all that stuff.

I'd recommend buying a seat, and using the carseat. It's easiest for everyone involved, will allow your child to sleep comfortably in a familiar place if needed, and will most importantly keep him safe in the event of turbulence.

My flight into Orlando a few weeks ago was PARTICULARLY bumpy...

We never bought a seat for either of our 2 when they were under two, and it was fine. My DS probably flew a total of 8 times like that and he was always fine/happy. My DD flew also 8 times like that and as she got older she got a little harder. She's much more independant and doesn't like being confined, but we survived and it went fine. If we ever have another child under two and were flying I highly doubt we'd ever buy a seat for them. Good luck in whatever you decide!

I completely agree. DH works in the aviation industry and it's not even a discussion in our house, we buy the seat. God forbid anything should happen, even a "bumpy landing" could be dangerous. Have a great trip and safe flight. :goodvibes

We're a family of 5 and I know how expensive it is to fly, but for a 3 hour flight, I would bite the bullet and buy a seat. That's a long lap time, for both of you. Safety is a concern, but I'll admit that it's comfort that would drive my decision!

Add us to the list of parents that always bought their kids a seat. Their safety doesn't have a price.

Ask many of the pilots and flight attendants...they will tell you that they wish that seats were required for EVERYONE.

Many people feel that "of course" I could hold onto my child if there was terbulance. But, seriously, think about it, if (g)you hit an unexpected bump in the air, your child could really get hurt....that's why the captain will always tell you to leave your seatbelts on "just in case". Not even close to worth it to take the chance, IMHO.

Also, considering your child's age...there is NO WAY I would try to keep that child still and in place on a plane for a few hours. I would plan my flights around naptime, if I could, and put my child in her carseat and leave it at that.

Good luck with whatever you decide...it's clearly a very personal decision.

We usually buy DS22months a seat because he will sit in his car seat and not expect to be let out but for our trip home from FL we extended our trip by 2 days and couldn't get him a seat. I have one of the Baby B'Air harnesses that I put on him during the flight. We were all MISERABLE because since he was on a lap he thought he could get down on the floor and crawl all over us. Never ever again!

Buy the seat.

Buy the seat. Everything and everyone in the plane is strapped down for takeoff/landing/turbulence. Even the coffee pots. Are you required to wear a seatbelt on the plane? The way I look at it is...if *I* and every other human (the crew, the pilot) must be belted in, why NOT my precious baby?

Doesn't make much sense. I don't need a law to make the right decision. Physics is a good enough law for me!

Oh this is the one topic guaranteed to get the 2 opposite sides to the argument going with a passion.
You have to do what you are comfortable with. My dd was lap child until 2. I never had even a moment of concern about her safety. Since 3 months old she flew once from London to Melbourne (Australia) and 4 times from London to Orlando.

I don't even know why I was contemplating it....DH told me not to buy the seat, that we'd be fine between the 2 of us. LOL Not buying a seat for DD when she was little wasn't an option...never even crossed my mind not to buy her one. Now that we have to buy 4 tickets, however...it's a bit harder.

Just to let you all know, I followed my gut & bought him a seat. I feel good about it. He's a complete angel now at 6mths...but who knows what kind of a 1yr old he'll be! And I'd never forgive myself if anything happened and I could've prevented it but was too cheap to.

To offset the $200 ticket, we'll be taking Magical Express & not renting a car this time! That's all...problem solved. :goodvibes (Never took ME before because you can't use a car seat & I never felt safe having DD on the bus that long without one...it's never ending. LOL)

Thanks to everyone for their stories & advice! Can always count on the Disers to help weigh the options!
