Our grandson (6) is butterfly crazy. We were wondering if there are any butterfly exhibits at the Animal Kingdom? I know of the Port Orleans Acadian House butterfly house - if there is nothing at the Animal Kingdom, can someone give me directions for this? We are staying off-site.

I know that there are some preserved specimens in the Research Center on the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.
I will also check Rafiki's Planet Watch as well.

That is a good question! Not one that is asked very often, but I will look into it for you

During Epcot's F&W festival there's a butterfly garden between Mouse gears and MS. after the festival a lot of the same plants are usually still there. It's in the same area as the bird houses. There might be something about butterflies in the tea garden at the UK pavilion, and I think there's a butterfly garden at beach club, which is out the back door of Epcot. A few other resorts have them as well. (Contemporary, and Fort Wilderness)

OKay, here is what I was able to find out as far as Animal Kingdom is concerned. The only butterflies that I found where preserved specimens and they are on the Pangani Trail. They will be in the Research Center which will be the building just before the birds. ONce you walk through the door, you will see some shelves on left. The butterflies will be in the two drawers in the middle under where the scorpion is caged. You do NOT have to walk through the rest of trail if you don't want to see anything else.

I was told that the butterfly house at Port Orleans in no longer there.

Irisesareblue, I am totally unfamiliar with where you live, but see if any reasonable local zoos or museums have walk through butterfly exhibits. We live close to New York City and were able to do one at the zoo and the Natural History museum. Also, you can have your own butterflies at home. You can purchase a butterfly habitat and mail away for the caterpillars. It's not too involved and not to gross! My then three year old loved it. I have yeat to do it again, though I would love to. Just be careful not to release them on a really hot day or they can die. Check Amazon and a company called Insect Lore. I'm not sure if they ship to your neck of the woods, but its worth a shot.

Wouldn't a permanent butterfly walk-thru area at AK be the coolest thing ever?!? I'd visit it often! LOL

I remember that a few years ago, I saw a butterfly room inside Rafiki's Planet watch. It was over to the left as you come in the front doors, sort of accross from the exhibit of different animal foods. I remember that it was display of butterflies in a back yard, and I thought it was so interesting that they recommended Gatorade as a food. I don't know if the exhibit is still there, however.

Not sure if it is about to fit into your plans for not. But there is a butterfly house about two hours from Disney in Gainesville, FL. It is on the campus of the University of Florida.

Here is a link to their website: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflies/

Their website says that parking is $4 a day and tickets to the butterfly house are $9.50 for adults and $5 for children from ages 3-12.
