Last time I was at Universal I saw a couple of people around the park with glass butter beer glasses. Is there any way to get these? The only ones that I saw they had available where plastic and I would really like to get a couple of the glass ones when I go on my trip if they have them.

If we're thinking of the same thing, they weren't really glass. The were just clear plastic glasses, as opposed to the frosted plastic mugs.

Basically, Universal sold out of their "2 year" supply of Butterbeer mugs in under 2 months (including soft openings). The only replacements they could get immediately were clear plastic tumblers with the Butterbeer logo. Sold those for maybe a month, until the traditional mugs returned.

Maybe you could find one on Ebay (I think I still have one, never occured to me it would be a collector's item), but they aren't sold anymore.

Just curious...do you know how they determine what would be a 2 year supply, and how many mugs it was? You would think that they would have estimated more aggressively, unless it's a standard amount or something!

I think they would have probably estimated the number of guests they had per year and then estimated how many people buy refreshments. They said that they did not know it was going to be this popular so they estimated very low.

When we went for butter beer, they asked if we wanted the mug or just a plastic cup, so you can still get them.

This was in the pub... At the cart, they didn't offer anything (oh yes, we had 2 rounds of butterbeer ;-) )

OK, but...they do offer them in a fancy plastic mug, or a plain (but still WWoHP logoed) plastic cup. So they weren't necessarily offering you a glass mug (can you imagine the nightmares allowing glass to be carried around the parks?).

There's also a Hog's Head mug that's plastic, but REALLY looks like glass from far away. It's a bit bigger than the Butterbeer mug, and it has a hog's head on it, but from far away, if you didn't see the actual picture on it, it could easily be mistaken for glass.

Universal sold 1 million butterbeers within 6 months of WWOHP opening....its VERY popular, so I can understand how they sold out of the glass mugs so quickly

It's an actual sturdy plastic mug, with a handle. It says "Butterbeer" on it twice, and has WWoHP info embossed on the bottom. It is not microwave or dishwasher safe (so it says), but it is rather sturdy and should last a long time. It has a slightly "frosted" appearance, it's not completely clear. The regular plastic cups are just disposable cups like you get at a party, except I think they say something about WWoHP or universal or butterbeer on them. The plastic cups are free; the mugs cost an extra $10 above the cost of the drink. You can use the mugs for the cheap soda refill program in the parks, but I don't think they give you discounts on butterbeer refills.

The Hog's Head mugs are more clear, but the bartender said they would only sell them with alcoholic drinks in them, and they could not be refilled with non-alcoholic drinks. This is to prevent underage drinking in the parks.

On my first visit last July 2010, they had ran out of the refillable Butterbeer mugs and in their place they were selling refillable Butterbeer cups. They were the same type of plastic as the mugs but not frosted and were much taller than the regular drink cups so they did appear to be glass but were not. From what I was told those cups were only in use until they got a restock of the mugs. In 6 trips since then I have not seen those cups used at all.

They do ask you if you want your butterbeer in a plastic cup or the mug, but the cup they are offering is just a plain plastic disposable drink cup that says Wizarding World of Harry Potter on it. It is the same cup all other drinks are served in at the Three Broomsticks and there is no upcharge for it as there is with the mug and was with the refillable Butterbeer cups.

This is the "free" cups :-)

That butter beer looks sooooooo good!!!!!! Last time I was at universal I had gotten a mug but then decided to get a free cup as well. I ended up washing it out and taking it home and now it sits on my Harry potter shelf:laughing:

ack, I hate whenever someone posts a pic of butterbeer and I can't go get some!
