Butterbeer - I just don't get it?

Unfortunatly I read somewhere that Hog's Head is not allowed to mix or add any of their alcohol with Butterbeer even though both is provided.

However suppose you were to buy a cup of beer and a cup of butterbeer and went back to your table and pour the two of them into your butterbeer mug...:wizard:

..and then go running for the nearest toliet.

That's about what I was thinking!

Not a Hugh Harry Potter fan but did start reading the books so I could understand the hype. Have to admit that the books are quite good. I am almost half way through the 3rd book and still have not read a reference to Butterbeer. How many books are in the series? I am hoping to read them all before our trip at the end of August.

There are 7 in all: Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkhaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows. References to Butterbeer are usually just made in passing, either at meals in the Great Hall, or when on trips to Hogsmeade.

If I remember correctly, the 3rd book is where Butterbeer first pops up. I believe Ron talks about it after he and Hermione go to Hogsmeade the first time.

In my experience with fans, book three is where they got hooked. Hope you enjoy, each book just gets better and better. You'll love the scene in book four where the house elf is drunk on butterbeer.

Butterbeer was very yummy, Frozen was good too.

Yep, the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, was the one that got me. I read the first two sort of casually and liked them, but when I read POA, I was hooked. I then read Goblet of Fire and began the wait for Order of the Phoenix and each subsequent book. Now that we are booked for September, it's just another excuse to read the entire series again. Not that I need an excuse. I usually read them about once a year. :)

POA is definitely where the series started getting darker. I probably will have to buy new copies of the first 2-3 as the bindings are starting to wear (yes, my name is John and I read the HP books once a year). :cool1:

I have my suspicions that while butterbeer is not alcoholic, it may contain crack. I have no other explanation for the fact that whenever I drink it, I crave more for days. Smart way for Uni to keep the locals coming back to WWoHP.

I think I've only read my hardcovers once or twice. As they came out in trade paperback, I bought them in that form so I wouldn't mess up my hardcovers. I also made notes in the margin here in there in my trades. Yes, I have a problem, I know. :rotfl:

Oh, and I also have the British childrens versions in hardcover. What can I say, I'm a Potterholic.

butterbeer is people!!

I just took it as that when she had hers arms around both Ron and Harry... it seemed almost as if they were guiding her. They were giddy.

Don't worry, it's not just you.

I watched it agian a few days ago and thought to myself "Why did I never noticed Hermione was 'tipsy" before?"

Tried butterbeer for the first time yesterday. I was surprised that I liked it. My husband on the other hand thought it was disgusting! I was very happy to see that it didn't raise my blood sugar too much. I guess at the carbs in it so I could take insulin to cover it and I apparently guessed right!

LOL Butterbeer tastes like a light rootbeer with a little butterscotch to it. It is sweet. We got one and shared.

People line up forever for it because it is the "experience" of drinking what the fictional characters drink. Just about the same common sense as people waiting for hours to go into a shop to have a piece of wood choose them and then charging them $30 for the whole thing. Really good marketing. :)

Hmm. Still not getting it.

I am a fan more of both the movies and the books. But not a hardcore rabid fan. To me, Butterbeer never seemed an important part of the story. If I hadn't read the fervor on the boards and went to the park, I might of not have even remembered it.

I do understand wanting to live and experience elements from the Harry Potter world. So in that regard it makes sense. But I'd think people would be more excited about getting a wand or robe than one drink that I didn't remember until I saw the postings here. I guess it is not that I am surprise people think it a cool thing to try. What I am surprised about is that people seem more excited about it than getting a wand or chocolate frog.

Plus, I don't care whether or not the drinks had an alcoholic effect in the book/movie (and it seems like there is a little debate on that) I would be disappointed to buy a "Beer" and then find out it had no alcohol. Especially if I waited in a long line for it.

Same here! I have all the American versions in hardcover, and all of the British versions (first 5 in paperback, last 2 in hardcover). I dragged my poor mom all over London to find Deathly Hallows in hardcover two years ago!

And I'm very careful with all my British versions, my American hardcovers are too big to stick in my bag (plus I don't want to mess those up either)...so I considered getting the paperback box set as well.

Yeah, it's definitely a problem. :rotfl:

The bolded explains why you feel the way you do. But surely you understand that not everyone is going to feel that way.

I'm a big Harry Potter fan. I did remember Butterbeer from the books. I've bought plenty of chocolate frogs over the last few years, when another company had the rights to them. (And I was much more excited about those than the ones at WWoHP because they were cheaper and they had lots of cards available instead of just the 4 currently offered at WWoHP.) The Noble Collection wands have been available for years, and most people won't be selected to have their wands choose them at Ollivanders, so I can see why people might not be that excited about the wands.

I love rootbeer, and even go to an Irish pub/brewery specifically to get the (nonalcoholic) rootbeer that they brew there. I think it tastes good, and I don't care that it has "beer" in the name and isn't alcoholic. Judging by how much of it they sell, I'm guessing there are plenty of other people who feel that way.

I'm looking forward to trying Butterbeer. It sounds like something I will enjoy. I remember reading about it in the books and wishing I could try it. Now I can. I'm excited about that. I don't see what's to "get" about that. Some people are excited about it; you aren't. People like different things, and that's normal.

Let me tell you my perspective....

When I first heard that they were building a Harry Potter land in Universal one of the first things I thought (and I even said it to a friend of mine that was a HP fan) was "I can't wait to try some Butterbeer!"

At the time, nothing was confirmed but I knew there was going to have to be Butterbeer. It sounded so delicious in the books and everytime it was mentioned my mouth would start watering. Even the name Butterbeer to me sounds delicious. I however thought it was alcoholic, but I'm not upset that it isn't.

It's the drink of choice in the World of Harry Potter... why would you be surprised that people are fiending it?

I also want a wand, a robe, possibly a chocolate frog, and maybe some other candies from the movies but I wouldn't be upset if I ended my trip without purchasing them. I would, however, be upset if my trip ended and I never had Butterbeer. Butterbeer or bust!

Butterbeer was definitely one of the first things that popped into my mind when I heard that they were building WWOHP. I think the alcoholic thing is up to interpretation...Hermione did seem pretty tipsy in the Half Blood Prince movie adaptation. And, for those who say that the character are kids and don't drink alcohol.... Not so, what about the poisonous mead? That's alcoholic.

Either way, non-alcoholic butterbeer will taste just great for me! I can make the alcoholic version at home :)
