Butter dish question?

So, this stretches the definition of budget, but the way it is going, I may be spending lots of $$$, which will certainly eat into my budget.

We had a nice, clear glass butter dish, with the base and a top that nestled into the base. It sat in the "butter compartment" of our refrigerator door. Someone, could have been me, but could have been someone else, did not close the butter compartment, so the next person that opened the fridge was treated to flying and then shattering butter dish.

No big deal, went to K-Mart, got an AnchorHocking/Norpro replacement.

Only problem is that the top tapers and the stick "sticks." Makes a mess. Ordered different one from ebay, it also does not treat a single quarter stick well, which is what I am looking for. So, now I am $20 into this and am looking at all I can find on Amazon and EBay and can find nothing. NOTHING.

I really don't want to keep throwing darts. Does anyone know of a plain glass, clear butter dish that takes one single quarter stick with a bit of "breathing room?" That's American sticks, not those skinny Euro butters such as Kerry Gold.

We have the pioneer woman butter dish from Walmart and I...think...it's fine? I've never noticed any issues? But I'm not a butter dish connoisseur, don't really know what you'd be looking for specifically. It holds a stick of butter perfectly well. We had a solid white one from bed bath and beyond before that...it seemed to work pretty well, too (?)

This is a bit funny. I just got finished making a Pioneer Woman (Ree Drummond) recipe -- it was jazzed-up Chili Queso. I can't stand it, but we are having guests over the weekend who love it. Now I have to clean up the mess.

Anyway, thanks for the tip, but it appears the Pioneer Woman dish is not just plain, clear glass, which is my quest. We did have one, so I know they are out there....at least I hope so...

Thanks, again for the help, but wifey wants a plain glass, no crystal look, no lines, no printing, no cows, etc. Pretty much a clear window glass look, just like the one in the link I posted, except a stick of butter needs to fit without "sticking."

Take a look at Bed Bath and Beyond - they have several plain glass - and the look them up on Amazon (cheaper). OXO has a fairly plain one that looks like it fits a standard american stick of butter (think Land-O'Lakes).

Good luck finding one and making wifey happy :)

You might try TJ Maxx if you have one. I bought a Le Crueset butter keeper ($16.99!) there recently. It wasn't clear, but there were several other styles available.

Well, thanks all!

I was going to work on my car, but it is windy and rainy, so maybe a jaunt to TJMAXX is in order. Funny, went to Bed, Bath and Beyond a week or so ago and they had nothing acceptable, so went to a snooty "home" store downtown where the clerks were gathered in a circle discussing the various advantages/disadvantages of Henckels, Wusthof, Shun and other expensive knives and did not want to bother to help me.

Finally, one condescended to help me find "exactly" what I was looking for. It was the exact same dish that I had purchased at K-Mart -- for $4 more. I mentioned that the butter sticks to the top and she said "Oh, I know, I have this one at home. All you have to do is shave a quarter-inch or so of butter off the top."

Really? Not me. Then she suggested Bed/Bath/Beyond....I've seen the OXO and I like their products, but the black feet on their dish is a dealkiller. Also, interesting is that the OXO website says:

"Accommodates longer, slimmer sticks (the dominant shape east of the Rocky Mountains) as well as shorter, stouter sticks (commonly found out West), with measurement markings for each."

Did not realize the difference in size between sections of the country. I'm in Oregon, so the Anchor Hocking dish is probably fine for someone in Virginia...

Well, I'll try TJMaxx....it's next to Trader Joes' and I need some Two-Buck-Chuck anyway for our guests later today.

I was just getting ready to tell you that the typical "American size butter" is different depending on where you live in the USA! My family found this out when we moved from California (shorter, fatter stick) to Virginia (longer, skinnier stick).

ETA: We also discovered some other interesting differences. Best Foods Mayo is called Hellman's Mayo back east. And Dryer's ice cream is called Edy's ice cream...same exact thing, different name.
