The clubhouse for our son's Little League went up in flames last night. It happened at 3 am, and we were just there 7 hours earlier, on a beautiful early summer evening, with the sound of baseball bats, the shouts of encouragement, the sight of the boys running the bases.
The clubhouse, of course, is the central anchor of all the entire league. The location of the concession stand, the PA system, the restrooms, the current rankings and pairings, and a second home to the Villhauers, an older couple who have been the league commisioners for as long as anyone can remember.
A total loss.
The cause of the fire was listed as "suspicious".
Our 9 year old asked "What does that mean, Mom?"
I said, "It means that someone may have deliberately set that building on fire."
Mark is shocked and sad. "But WHY, Mom? Why would someone do something like that?"
I didn't have an answer . . .

That's a shame.
