BREAKING NEWS President Bush defends deal to let a Dubai-based company run 6 major U.S. ports, saying he would veto any bill to hold up the deal.

THsi just broke on CNN i dont understand why Bush thinks this is good for our country. Many of the REpublicans are already against it and Frist is now trying to stop it. Is there a good reason for this? what am i missing.

This man is totally insane!! Now, we are not only giving them acess to our ports, but we are paying them to blow us to kingdom come!!

Veto power and this is what he uses it for? Completely out of touch. I'm emailing my congressman now.

You know - as past posts have shown - I've always been VERY Pro-Bush.

This bothers me tremendously. :confused3

i just dont get it. This makes no sense to me. Especially with many republicans saying this is a bad idea and that they will pass legislation to stop this. Isnt there a way congress can go over a veto. What is it like 2/3rd of them and overtrun the veto or something??

Five years with NO veto, and THIS is what he would choose to use his first veto on?? You've got to be kidding me!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ talks. The next contestant is George Bush, and the topic is Corruption.

Just for the heck of it, go back and watch 9/11 again. Even if you hate the filmaker, look at the factual events that are depicted. There is no difference here. Taking care of the family friends, and, I am sure, some close friends, relatives, etc. will make a pretty penny on some "totally unrelated" oil deal with the UAE.

1 - There was a New York Times article in the past couple days detailing White House connections with the UAE company. Why would it surprise anyone that Bush is continuing his pattern of Cronyism? This certainly shouldn't come as any great shock, particularly for those of you that have been supporting him all along.

2 - The country in question is one of only three in the world to have recognized the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan...along with our other "allies" (and grand Bush family friends) the Saudi's. So, again...why the surprise?

3 - If you think Bill Frist is doing anything but reading the polling data and seeing that the public isn't happy, I've got a bridge I can sell you, cheap. :teeth:

Playing Devils Advocate::::

President Bush called on opponents to explain why they opposed a Middle Eastern firm taking over when they did not oppose a British company being in control.

The Brits don't have ties to the taliban, and through them to the people that attacked us 4+ years ago. Also, the British company was a private entity, whereas the UAE company is state owned and run. The flaws in that scenario should be obvious (though it's also obvious that Bush will never see them).

::yes:: My thought is that he is threatening this as a sort of preemptive strike hoping it might force Congress to go along with this wrong-headed idea. I can only hope that he's not going to dust off the veto stamp for this, but also hoping that if he does, Congress has the guts to override it.

that one should be easy - the last time the Brits tried to blow us to Kingdom Come was in 1812. :teeth: The last time someone from the middle east suggested blowing the US to Kingdom Come was - wait, what time is it?

Hopefully, the Democrats and Republicans can pull together on this one and override any veto.

Does anyone know why we don't just keep the British company?

British company is privately owned - they just wanna sell. And the Arab company wants to buy it (they own other ports around the world)

I guess because Britian didn't fly planes into our buildings would be a good start. When this story 1st broke I tried to give GWB the benefit of the doubt. I'm usually quick to jump on what an idiot he is so I wanted to wait to read/hear more about this. I should really just learn to go with my gut instincts. One of my biggest concern is this is a government owned company not a private enterprise.

BTW, CathrynRose - best wishes on your upcoming wedding. We were in Vegas last June and it was lots of fun but hotter than heck. Good Margarita weather :cool1: .

As a sure sign of the approaching end of the world, Jimmy Carter backs Bush on port deal.

While there is little reality in the hyperventilation underway that the deal will in any concrete way make our ports less safe, this is a bad political move on Bush's part. People don't care that the folks working at the ports will still be Americans, as they are now working for the Bristish P&O company... they just have visions of guys running around our ports in turbines and long white robes when thinking about the deal. Nor do they care that the sudden alarm of the operation moving from a British owned company to an Arab owned company will only throw fire on the Arab world notion that America is purely anti-Muslim and anti-Arab. Nor do they care that all existing security programs and requirements would still be in place. Nor do they care that Homeland Security will have access to the ports and be able to review their operation. Nor do they care that the UAE is the only country now implimenting the new post-9/11 shipping container security rules. Nor do they care that post-9/11 the UAE is still one of the most pro-Western countries in the Arab world.

None of that matters now that people are running around going "OMG, Arabs are going to be running our ports!" If any of you have middle-eastern friends, be sure to express that outrage to them the next time you see them.

President Carter, what are you thinking? :confused3

The article didn't say much but hopefully he'll address that more in the coming days. I'd like to know why he thinks it's not a concern.

I've flip-flopped a few times over this. Our own government running the port scares me more than this company.

Well, I think it's better than the government running them. Seriously...Imagine if it was the DHS running the ports. :crazy2:

We'd have lines of ships all the way back to China.
