BUSH SUPPORTS DON RICKLES FOR MAJORITY LEADER
Typo May Have Led to Surprise Nod
In a move that surprised Senate Republicans and Democrats alike, President George W. Bush today announced his support for notorious insult comic Don Rickles to replace embattled Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss) as Senate Majority Leader.
At a time when the Republican Party is in need of healing, I believe that Don Rickles is the best man for the job, the President said from the Rose Garden.
The move to support comedian Rickles, whose act over the years has consisted to some extent of outrageous racial and ethnic slurs, was particularly surprising since the man Rickles would be replacing, Senator Lott, ran into trouble precisely because of racially insensitive remarks he made.
The choice of the Vegas comedian was even more perplexing, Senate Republicans said, because Mr. Rickles is not currently a member of the U.S. Senate nor was he a victor in the recent midterm elections.
Some of the confusion surrounding the Presidents support of Don Rickles was clarified later in the day, however, when White House press secretary Ari Fleischer blamed the Rickles endorsement on a typo.
The President meant to endorse Don Nickles, not Don Rickles, Mr. Fleischer said, referring to Senator Don Nickles of Oklahoma.
The clarification came as a relief to comedian Rickles, who, in an interview at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, called the President a hockey puck for endorsing him.
I saw Bush on TV endorsing me, Mr. Rickles said. What I want to know is, who picked out his clothes Stevie Wonder?
