Greetings!

I'm starting to make my list of things to pack and all these questions are coming to mind.

How do I know if there's a formal night on my cruise? (5-night on Magic)

The no flipflop/sandals/runners rule applies to the MDR and to kids as well?

Could my kids (6 and almost 4) get away with closed toe sandals like Keens?

Should I pack water bottles (for kids and/or adults)?

How much Avengers stuff is there? I keep telling DS that he probably won't see the Hulk aboard.

Thanks in advance! I may have more questions later which I'll just edit the OP.

5 night cruises typically have a "Dress Up Optional" night, not a formal night.
The only "rule" in the MDR (referencing dress) is "no swimwear or tanks tops at dinner". But nothing about flip/flops. Where are you seeing it?
We always bring our personal refillable water bottles.
Don't know that there are characters - just decor - for the Avengers.

Thanks! I guess I confused things. I assumed that it's no flip flops / runners in the MDR... I don't have other shoes for the kids (unless you count rubber boots and bogs) so I was going to make a plea to borrow pairs from friends!

Honestly, you'll see all manner of dress in the MDRs. From dressy to shorts and tshirts. Even on Dress Up night. I believe the only venue that flip/flops are not permitted is Palo. And that's adult-only.

We were on the Magic last spring, and while we didn't see the Hulk, Captain America WAS on the ship :) There's obviously no guarantees (and we were actually at sea when Age of Ultron premiered, so got to see that on the ship too), but I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one character on the ship. Especially as the Magic has the Avenger's Academy on board.

I always pack tumblers with straws for my family. You can find nice character themed ones for the kids as well.

And yes like others have said kids can wear most anything other than swimsuits. My DS (4) wore his Mickey Crocs almost every night except dress up/formal night.

I encourage you to check out past navigators to gain better insight as to what the dress code may be for each night they can be found here http://disneycruiselineblog.com/personal-navigators/ along with lots of other invaluable information.

From what I hear formal night is only on 7-night and longer cruises. We were on a 5-night Magic last year and there was no formal nor semi-formal night. People just wore what they want to dinner at the MDRs and dressed up for Palo.

Nah you can wear any footwear you want. I wore flipflops and sandals to dinner all the time, but I did wear a dress to dinner. I saw people wear many different things. Just what you feel comfortable, I guess.

Yes! My niece who was 4, wore crocs most of the time.

Should I pack water bottles (for kids and/or adults)?
If you like the convenience of having one then yes, but you can always get some Disney-themed ones on the ship. I brought my own, my sister-in-law gave us one as a gift, and I bought one while onboard too (I liked the design) - so needless to say I had the inconvenience of packing all 3 of them on the way home!

Probably not hulk, but there is the Avengers Academy for kids, and we saw Captain America on board as well.

Enjoy your cruise!

We got a picture with Captain America also. I think I was more excited than DS. He looks good in a uniform!

You can always explain that the Hulk is off on another adventure or that it isn't very safe to have him on the ship incase he feels grouchy. That might help!
