Bumbo Baby Seats?

Looking for some advice from all the "moms" out there.

We're planning a baby shower for my sister who is due in March. She will be registering at Babies R Us for all the usual stuff, but I recently heard about some sort of baby seat called a Bumbo that I'd like to get her as a surprise.

I took a look at it on some of the websites and it looks great....but what about the baby's head? It looks to me (and bear in mind that I don't have kids so I'm NO expert on this stuff) that the baby's head has no support whatsoever.

Does anyone have one of these? Can you give me some info or opinions?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Bumbo seats are to be used when the baby can sit up by themselves. I almost got one for my DD, but I didn't.

For a newborn, I would suggest a bouncy seat. Before I had my DD, I said I would never use one. After using one, I was ready to nominate the bouncy seat inventor for a Nobel Peace Prize!

oooooh!!! so cute. I checked out the website and now I want one for DS 6 months!!. I think it's a great gift idea, even if she doesn't use it right away. I wish I had something like that when DS wasn't sitting too strongly yet. I say get it. It's reasonably priced too!! :sunny:

It looks like one of those things that only has a short window of opportunity - it would get used for about 4 weeks, and then it wouldn't be needed anymore.

I agree that a bouncy seat is a lot more useful.

I want one for DD3 months. Hmmmm, maybe Santa will bring one. No flat head or bald spot from lying down or sitting in the bouncy. I hope babies r us carries it!

I don't think the baby has to be able to sit up by himself, but he has to be able to hold his head up. I would have loved one when DS was a little younger and if we have another baby in the future, I'll buy one.

I agree with this. It looks really cute and I bet it's pretty cool for those 4 weeks or so, but it seems to me that by the time a baby has enough upper body control to sit in one, he's not far from sitting up on his own, anyway.

I think DD will get a little more use out of it than that. I checked it out on the website and it says as long as they can support their head. She has just stopped doing the bobble head thing but seems a couple of months away from sitting on her on so maybe 8 weeks instead of 4. She is extra socialable baby so being able to "sit" and hang out with the rest of the fam should really excite her!!!

I second that motion! it was the ONLY thing, aside from hanging off one of my body parts, DS would sleep in for the first 3 months.

It seems like a DIS'er has a picture in her sig of her child in one of those seats. They didn't have them when my kids were babies. I think it would be a really nice gift.
