Buffy? Charmed? Or neither?

Hi all! Not sure where to post this question, either here or on the Budget Board, but I'm hoping to get some opinions. I am thinking ahead to Christmas presents for my daughter who is 14. It was much easier to shop for her when her wish list consisted of baby dolls and Barbies!

These days, like many teen girls, she's very much into the whole Twilight saga and watches "The Vampire Diaries". She also enjoys movies like "The Craft". Despite my MIL's protests, I don't mind my daughter's interest in those sort of things. I remember being into that around her age too, so I guess it's not a big deal. After all, I didn't grow up to be a witch or a vampire! ;)

The problem is she has a lot of items, shirts, merchandise, etc related to those already. So I started thinking a bit more "old school" and remembered the tv series "Charmed" and "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer". I thought maybe I could buy her the DVDs to watch. The problem is, I never watched so much as one episode while those shows were on tv. Does anyone here remember watching those shows? Were they any good? Are they comparable to some of those type of shows today, such as "Vampire Diaries"? Between the two which do you think was better?

Also does anyone have any other ideas of books/shows/movies that are along the same lines as Twilight that I could look into getting for her? Nothing too adult or gory. I'm not talking True Blood material. lol Just something sort of tame that a teen girl who's fascinated by witches and vampires might find interesting?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Buffy! But warn her that season 1 starts off slow. Everything gets better from season 2 on.

I would think DD would want something contemporary, not something so "last season," or with Charmed and Buffy, a couple years old now. Teens like to keep up with their peers and have the latest trends out, to stay cool & be able to discuss with them.

DW and I are fans of both Buffy & Charmed. Buffy was the more popular of the two, however, and is still very relevant and popular today. If you're definitely going with one of these, I would go with Buffy.

It really depends on your DD. We get reruns of Charmed on cable and Buffy. I watch both with my DD14. She is way into vampires. I own the Buffy DVD's and she has been watching them.

I would find out first if she likes them and which one before purchasing.

I'd go with Buffy - but I agree with BillSears that it gets much better after season 1. When rewatching the series, I thought that season 1 held up the least well, but later seasons seem just like something that would be on television now. And of course if she likes "Buffy", she might also enjoy the spinoff, "Angel".

Buffy!

I have been rewatching all the episodes streamed on Netflix!

buffy is outstanding! if you have netflix you can always instant watch a few eps to see if she is interested. :)

I too would go with Buffy. I agree that Season 1 is a bit slow but then it moves super quick. I love this show and loved Angel too.

OKay, I'll keep that in mind about season 1 if we go with Buffy.

True, which is why she likes Vampire Diaries, but she's also watched Dawson's Creek, and the original 90210 which were both "before her time" so as long as a show is good, she'll watch it.

Thanks. I think I am leaning more towards Buffy.

Hmmm, wonder if I should see if they are on Netflix or something before jumping in and buying the entire complete series.

Ooooh "Angel"? That sound vaguely familiar but again, not a show I watched. You have a point. She could go from Buffy to Angel and that would give her more to watch......and keep busy with. lol

OK, so that answers my question about Netflix. It seems Buffy is the more popular choice here.

Buffy! Then you can direct her to this youtube video - absolutely priceless! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZwM3GvaTRM

OK, that was awesome! Very clever.

~~Thanks everyone for the replies so far. I am leaning more toward Buffy now. Anyone have any other ideas for shows/movies or books that are vampire related and geared towards teens?

Have you thought about Supernatural? It has a mixture of of all kinds of things, vampires, Werewolves....etc It also doesn't hurt that Sam and Dean are hot.

Buffy!

But you should watch them with her, because there's a lot in there that's relevant to teenagers.

Such as, "I finally slept with my boyfriend, and now he's a totally different person!" :lmao:

Or, "Beer bad!"

Buffy is very much a morality play about growing up, but it's twisty in how it approaches things, and it's useful if a parent is around to discuss the issues that come up. Not to mention, some of the later episodes get quite mature. ("I hate this guy, yet I totally want to do him.")

Your daughter is the perfect age to begin watching!

My vote would be for Buffy (and the spin-off Angel.) They are both great fun to watch.

You can go to hulu.com and watch every episode from season 2 of Buffy for free. You can also watch some free episodes of Angel at that site too.

Another vote for Buffy and Angel. I'm a big Buffy/Angel fan and have both series on DVD. My daughter who is 14 has just recently watched both twice already - LOL She LOVES the Buffy verse better then Twilight now:thumbsup2

Hi Deena! I remember you mentioning that show before and forgot all about it! Is it still on? I'll look into that, thanks. And hey, if it has hot guys in it, well, that's just a bonus for me! :thumbsup2

Thanks for pointing that out. It's good to know since I also have 10 year old twin girls who want to watch what their older sister watches and I often have to step in and say no.

Thanks. I don't think I've ever heard of hulu. I'll check it out.

I never watched Buffy, but totally loved Charmed.

Has she read the Vampire Diaries books?

I say one or two of each series. The first three years of Charmed are awesome(before Shannen Doherty left).

Buffy is just awesome. My 13 yr old became a fan of it three yrs ago but I'd only let him watch episodes that weren't so freaky. I mean there are even episodes that I won't watch(and I'm a huge, huge, huge fan) due to their just, creepiness(well mostly just the hyena and praying mantis episodes).

I would start with the earlier seasons of each and see what she thinks. My son is also a huge fan of Vampire Diaries, it's become one of his favorite shows.

And your daughter sounds pretty cool! I love that she watches the old school shows, I still totally dig Dawson's Creek.

As for Supernatural, yes it's still on the air. It's in its sixth season and it just gets better and better. Deals with a lot of mythological and supernatural subjects, but it also has some interesting theological overtones. And yes Sam & Dean are awesome.
