Buffalonians: Wegmans questions from an Canuck

We are planning a little cross-border shopping trip, and of course I want to stop at a Wegmans! I have a few questions for any Americans familiar with that city:

a) Are all the Wegmans identical? If not, which one would you recommend for the biggest selection of goods (I'm not interested in fresh produce, but mostly drygoods).

b) I am hoping to start collecting some coupons - does Wegmans have certain rules about them? (can I use only 1 per item, for example?)

I apologize if this should be in the Canadian or Budget forum, I really wasn't sure where to ask. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wegmans is my favorite grocery store! There is a wide variety in stores, though. The older stores are much more basic in their offerings. Newer stores have been remodeled, have more muted lighting, and offer in-store cafe dining and much more upscale/gourmet foods.
Coupons are generally doubled up to 99 cents, then face value for the rest. Although, now that I think about it, I believe you can use a cents-off coupon for an item, then also use a buy-one-get-one-free along with it.
Have fun shopping!

Ok I'm in NJ not NY but I LOVE Wegmans's!

Ours opened a few years ago & I swear I am there 4-5 times a week.

Prices are great. Store is always clean. Market Cafe & prepared foods are all very good & very convenient. The sushi is always fresh & they will make it to order. Artisan breads from the bakery are YUMMO! I could go on & on...

My only negatives are that it is so busy they can have a hard time keeping the shelves stocked & there are always people in the aisles restocking so its not for lack of trying. And also, because they offer such a huge variety of items sometimes they don't always carry all sizes/flavors/etc. of everything but if you mention it to guest services they will try to accommodate in the future.

Don't know of any restrictions on coupons.

Their store brands are all high quality. I've yet to be disappointed in any of them.

Do you get most of your coupons in the Sunday paper? I'd love to be able to get my hands on some of your American coupons, but we're a bit far away, up here.....

I am getting SO excited about this trip, looking forward to stocking up on all of those delicious treats that can't be found in our own local stores!

Mmm, I love Wegmans! I could spend all day (and a LOT of money) there. I always go to the one in Hamburg on McKinley Pkwy and it's really nice. All of the Wegmans-brand foods are wonderful and a great price. We go there for lunch/dinner frequently because we can get whatever we want. Fresh sushi, Indian, Chinese, salads, made-to-order fresh pasta, and I even had a falafel salad made for me the other day.
They give tasty and generous free samples too, which always makes grocery shopping more enjoyable.
I always get my coupons from the Sunday paper, but you could also look online. Have fun shopping!

Love Wegmans!! I'm from the city that Wegmans started (Rochester, NY). In our area there are some differences in the stores but not a lot. The Pittsford Wegmans does cater to the upscale area with a pastery shop (fancier desserts) and expanded choices in seafood/meat/cheeses, etc. Basically Wegmans knows how to do things right. Their customer service is awesome and their offererings are great.

Have a great shopping experience. :cool1:

Wah! I miss Wegmans!! I worked there through high school (in Syracuse) and was a faithful shopper all through college (Buffalo). Then I had to go and move to DC...then to NC...and there is no Harris Teeter, Publix, or Piggly Wiggly around that can come close to comparing.

...sorry, didn't really contribute anything to this thread, but now I'm all missing a grocery store...:sad2:

Well, I agree with all of you. The first time DH and I walked into a Wegmans we were floored. The hot foods! The selections! Our family spent half an hour just walking around the food bars, drooling and unable to decide what we were going to eat.

The other thing I envy... your coupon-culture!! It sounds sooo amazing, we don't really have that type of shopping environment up here.

:) Hi! You'll love Weggies! I am little predjudiced; one of my kids worked at West Seneca, one at McKinley thru college. Great stores. The only draw back is they carry lots of store brands, so brand names are getting a little more limited. Tho they still have mostly name brands.

If you tell us where you're staying, we can tell you where the closest store is. Or just ask at your hotel to get directions to the closest store. I think they all have the Cafes now. I think the Sheridan Dr. store has the second floor seating, but I could be wrong about that. ( I'm sure someone can tell us which store for sure.) It would be good to go for lunch & then shop.

I know you can't take produce across the border, but try some if you can. They have great produce.

Happy shopping! :)
