My sister's DH wants to take their family to Atlantis for my my sister's 40th. Does anyone have any budget tips?? He wants to stay at the resort. He knows that will be pricey, but any tips for the resort or food would be appreciated!

TIA!

Rent at the Harborside resort at Atlantis, it's on their property and you get full use of the facility. You also have a full kitchen for quick breakfast and refrigerator for cold drinks. We had our driver make a grocery store stop from airport to pick up snack food and drinks.

We have been to Atlantis several times! We swear by Harborside Atlantis! Love the fully equipped kitchen! Saves thousands of dollars for our family of 4. We take 2 cooler bags FULL of frozen meats, spaghetti sauce, taco meat, breakfast and lunch items! Plus a huge suitcase full of non-perishable items and dry goods.

Last summer we ordered groceries for items such as water, juice boxes, sodas, bread, etc...from www.foodstore2go.com

We were absolutely thrilled with their service and prices were right on par with the local grocery store where we usually stopped on prior trips.

You can get an idea of what the villas look like at www.atlantisfamilyfun.com

Good luck! It's an amazing family trip! We are able to do this trip because we are frugal while there by meal planning ahead of time. We'd be priced out if we didn't.

Have a great time!

I'm not sure that Atlantis and budget go together. I've been once and knew that it wasn't going to be cheap. Knowing that, I was not taken aback by the prices. The buffet was something like $45 a person.

BTW, I had no desire to cook while being on vacation.

We saved a ton of money by doing this. Comfort Suites is right next to Atlantis - it only takes a couple of minutes to walk there. You get all the benefits of staying at Atlantis, but much lower room rates, a free breakfast buffet, & free Wifi access. The hotel was clean & quiet. We booked at Costco travel & got a great deal. (If you book online, make sure the various hotel fees are included. They can really add up!)

Another way to save money is by packing snacks in your luggage. You can also buy water, soda, & alcohol at the shopping area next to the Comfort Suites for much better prices. Pack a small soft-sided cooler, fill with ice from the hotel, & bring your own drinks (and your snacks from home) to the water park. We did this every day.

We had so much fun on our trip. I hope you do too!

Oh, I forgot to mention that you should read through the forums on TripAdvisor for more great ideas about how to save money at Atlantis. That's how I planned our trip from start to finish.

We went last October...Stayed at Comfort Suites right next to Atlantis. Best part is that you get FULL ATLANTIS ACCESS for free when you stay here. There is a frig and microwave in your room..We stopped at the grocery and liquor store on the way from airport (establish cost before you get in with cabbie or they will try to charge you $1 per minute that you're stopped and service is NOT quick). Comfort Suites includes a basic continental breakfast...We bought some lunch things and drinks and would pack a soft sided cooler and bring it to the water park and/or Atlantis beach each day. Also loaded up the first night at the Marina Pizzaria - got a couple large things of pasta and a large pizza - so we had lots of leftovers that we had for lunch a couple days. So we basically only paid for dinner every night...Probably spent about $90 - $120 each night on dinner. One big money saving tip is to ask for water (tap water is fine) - as soft drinks are NOT free refills and the drinks (alcoholic and non) are pretty pricey - For a family of 4 this will save you a bunch.

Thread from earlier this year discussing his subject.

I received a couple requests/PMs for this advice, so I decided to start a dedicated thread on ways to vacation at Atlantis-Paradise Island Bahamas, for less. My tips:

1. Harborside timeshares....renting directly from owners, you can get a week at Atlantis for less. On places like TUG or RedWeek, you can connect directly with an owner and get a deal...or book through an agent like Family Fun at Atlantis, and have the security of a professional broker/business. Harborside units have cooking facilities so you don't have to eat out.

Atlantis access is included in a Harborside rental, so you don't have another $1,000 for park tickets once you get there. The downside of renting Harborside is you can only book in week long increments.

2. Comfort Suites-Paradise Island...usually cheaper than the traditional Atlantis towers, but same access to facilities. Plus, includes breakfast and wifi, which can be a $100+ per day savings for families.

Since its part of the Comfort Suites chains, they sometimes run specials, and nightly rates can move around.

3. Eat cheap...Atlantis is known for having expensive food. Very true, but the problem isn't so much everything's is expensive as it is that there are only a few places that are inexpensive. At dinner time, the only counter-service type place is the pizzeria...or the Quiznos. Yeah, its not glamorous to eat here, but it's decent quality taste and keeps you full.

Throw in a night at Johnny Rockets and you can feed your family for much less than the $75+ a person places that are the fine dining venues. Throw in a nicer family style meal at Carmines or Vergil's, and you can stretch one dinner into two.

4. And don't do the meal plan. Its priced such that if you go light on a single meal on your trip, it offers no savings. Both the gourmet and value plans are not priced for value but for convenience. Pay as you go, have some pizza or burgers for dinner a few nights and save.

Now if the meal plan is thrown in for free for kids, it's worth evaluating, but you still have to consider how you plan to eat. For most people, the meal plan pre-locks you into paying for much more food than you'll actually eat. Meal plan could be a value with kids for free, but still consider whether you normally eat a full-Monty buffet every breakfast and dinner of a vacation.

5. Your room pays for all the fun you really need. Unlike Disney or other theme parks, once you pay for your room, you *can be* done at Atlantis. Yes, there are excursions and dolphin experiences that cost extra....you don't have to do these to have a good time. I haven't been on an excursion in 10 years, and we've only done a dolphin experience once! And we go back annually and have enough fun that we want to go back again and again.

Plus there are lots of free activities: movie theater, trivia games, live music, touring the aquariums, and just a nice walk on the beach. Now people who need a snorkeling trip one day, jet skis the next, and a dolphin visit the next aren't going to find any place to vacation cheaply!

6. My traditional advice for people is to book airfare separately from you hotel package. This is because Atlantis and the CS have a habit of putting out significant near-term discounts. If your airfare is included in a package, you can't rebook your hotel at lower rates, but a room-only package has pretty lenient cancellation policies. You then just re-book at the new rates.

I tell people to buy airfare when they find a good price, then book a room rate they are comfortable paying. Then keep an eye out for the discounts, sometime around three months before a trip. or if you live somewhere that has reasonable airfare to Nassau, do it on short notice.

7. Subscribe to Travel Zoo newsletter (free). Occasionally, Atlantis offers discounts through codes they exclusively advertise on Travel Zoo. Pus, Travel Zoo keeps pretty good track of Atlantis' current general public discounts.

8. You a rated gambler? Atlantis will advance you comped rooms if you have an elite card from certain casinos. Hit the required play and get your room for free.

9. Go in the fall...aka hurricane season. Ocean water is warm, and the weather is nice, there's just the risk of a big storm. And rates are cheapest in September. Wife and I were actually at Atlantis once when a tropical storm (later grew to be a hurricane) passed through. Around noon, they closed own the outdoor activities and an secured loose stuff outside. Storm passed through late afternoon into the midnight hours. By 11 AM the next day, most pools were open for business and the skies were clear.

I'm happy to answer with questions.

Here's a few tips concerning food. Definitely pack a suitcase of snacks and breakfast items and a grocery stop for drinks. I would skip the buffets they were not worth the $$. Carmines has great food and is served family style, a salad and spaghetti and meatballs is plenty for 4-5. It was our cheapest dinner and one of the tastiest meals we had. Cave Grill is a good, inexpensive lunch and you can get free refills on drinks. Definitely eat at Mesa Grill the food is expensive everywhere, but this restaurant is actually worth the $$.

We ate at carmines twice and vergils twice. Vergils is family luke carmines, familt style and alot of food.

A little off topic, but I have a question for all of you who have been to Atlantis --- we are looking at going on a day pass. I was looking at their slide information online and it says suits with any metal are not allowed. All my husband & son's suits have rivets on them (tie at waist or on the bottom). The girls also have a metal hook on the back of their bikini tops. How strict are they with this rule? Do I need to buy everyone new swimsuits before we go?

this is a definite budget buster!! --glad I looked before going, would hate to be turned away from slides at this price!

When I was budgeting (never actually went), the biggest expense I had was the airfare. For us it was several thousand dollars for 4 of us to fly. The rooms at Atlantis were around $100 a night. It was a school vacation week, but couldn't pull the trigger on flights that expensive.

I think this is more a common sense thing...they don't want people hurting themselves, popping tubes, or scraping slides. Some people lack the aforementioned common sense and wear stud-encrusted swim were. Those would be prohibited.

People generally wear the normal spectrum of swimwear at Atlantis, so I don't think this is a zero tolerance thing, just a rule where they reserve the right to ask you to change suits if you have clothes that could be an issue.

Loving this thread! I have always wanted to do Atlantis for our beach days, but it always seemed so expensive (it may help that we are planning a fall vacation this year instead of our usual summer vacation). After checking, looks like we could book two rooms directly through Atlantis for 5 days for as little as $1,469.50 after tax (and honestly, we will probably pay that much to stay in a suite on St. Pete Beach anyway). Comfort Suites would be two rooms for $1,877.50. My biggest budget concern would be getting there. Looks like airfare would be over $400 pp from Orlando. We could drive to the closest part of FL if there are cheaper travel options by boat. Anyone know??

I booked ours thru cheapcaribbean.com - airfare and hotel together I thought was a good deal. We went last Columbus Day weekend...2 adults and 2 kids...flights from Rochester, NY, 4 nights Comfort Suites with breakfast and full Atlantis priviledges - Total was $2100. Since it was hurricane season I did pay for the upgraded travel insurance - so that tacked on about $100 extra each - but it was full refund for ANY reason if we needed it. Thank goodness we didn't.

Thank you! I didn't know how strict they are. One park district pool we went to had a waterslide and my son couldn't go down because of the metal on his suit (small gromits near the bottom of a pocket for drainage)
