budget help needed...not disney related

My 14 year old son is working this year and saving up to buy his own computer. So, we are looking at the best computer deal for him. Dell has that $299 deal, but then the shipping is $99. Does anyone know of a good deal? He's just looking for a desktop, 256, cd burner, with at least word perfect. Any ideas???

I have found the best deals for computers posted on fatwallet. Right now, office depot has some on clearance with a $200 rebate, and the one I got has an additional $50 rebate. Price before was $419 and I used a $30 coupon, so after all and taxes will be about $160. This is for computer only- no monitor(we are just using our old one). You can also buy a canon ip3000 for about $70 and get a $70 rebate wyb a computer.
I think compusa has a package deal this week.

I second just watching Fatwallet (hot deals section) for a few days/weeks and when Dell has some great deal (example....PC Plus 17'' LCD for $499) jump on it.




PS- If you're really on a budget you can always sell the LCD on ebay for a couple hundred dollars and get a CRT for $50.

I would at least consider a lap top...he'll be going to college in a few years right? We have gotten Dell's, Hp's and my dad has gotten Office Max...so you have gotten some good tips.

He'd like a laptop, but he's paying with his own money. I can't even loan him any right now With a unplanned trip for September, its taking my spare change

Can he wait until Thanksgiving. I bought my desktop at Best Buy on Black Friday (The day after thanksgiving). They alway have great deals and I have been very happy with it. The one that I got is an Emachine. They also had laptops.

I agree. We bought our last computer on Black Friday at Wal-Mart. Got a great computer at a steal.
