Budget Friendly Dance/Ballet Wear

Hello, budget-minded friends!

I figured if anyone would be able to help, it would be you Disers! Any of you know a good website where I can buy discounted dance wear?

My daughter just joined a competitive dance team (ballet & jazz dancing) at a dance school. I got complete sticker shock when I went to buy her Bloch jazz shoes---almost $50! She made the team, so now she is going to need dancewear for practice other than the same few Target-bought Danskin leotards and skirts she's worn for years. The girls at this dance school all wear leotards with matching "hot" shorts over them. She's due for some new dance clothes...I would just like to go about it in a budget way rather than shop around here at the pricey dancewear stores if possible.

If she's dancing at the level of competition team,then you are past the point where you can get away with shoes from Payless and she's probably out of the size range of leos available at Walmart and Target. You need to buy the 'good' stuff.

I actually buy most of my daughters shoes on Ebay, but when I strike out there, I get them at the local dance shop. I'd suggest that you get on the mailing list for any of the shops in your area ASAP because many times they send out sale flyers and discount coupons (the one I normally use always sends out a coupon good only in July for 20% off EVERYTHING, so I buy shoes early with that coupon).

I've purchased things on several of the dance discount websites, but I can never remember which because the names are all similar and I get confused. But they all mostly have a clearance section of discontinued items, and I always start by looking in that section first. Luckily at our studio, at my 14yo DD's level (she's in highest groups) they are restricted what they can wear, but any brand is okay: Pink tights, black leo (any style) for ballet. For all other classes they have to wear pink tights, and then they can choose a black leo or a tank top (any color) and/or Black dance shorts or black capri length dance pants. I still buy the black capri's at Walmart and sometimes I can find shorts there. Tank tops I usually get either at Walmart or Old Navy. The Leos I order from one of the discount dance places (she's been wearing the same one for two years, and she only has one).

Liberts and Discount Dance are two of the place my wife recommends. She owns a dance studio and has been a dancer all her life. Make sure her feet are properly measured for her shoes especially Ballet.

DD13 has taken ballet for several years, and i buy her leotards and tights at allaboutdance.com. i go through sunshine rewards and get cash back.
her leotards are bloch brand and she's worn them 3 years. her tights are danskin run resistant-and they really are! she's worn them for 3 years as well, and we just found a couple of tiny holes in the knee of one pair last week. they're no more expensive than what her dance studio sells, and WAAAAAAY more durable!

discountdance.com is great, and once you get on their mailing list you'll get e-mail offers for free shipping and sales, etc. It is worth it to buy the better leos and especially tights because they'll last much longer. Make sure the shoes really fit well or she could have problems with her feet down the road. Enjoy, dance is SO fun!!

Tights, leos and regular ballet shoes I buy from discount dance. Pointe shoes I buy from the local store - they need to be fitted each time.

Discount Dance is the way to go, and I second the PP who said you're better off going for quality. It really does last longer!

We never had an issue with shoes from them, but pointe shoes are in a different category--you'll need those professionally fitted until the dancer has stopped developing and can get the same kind of shoes each time.

Good luck to your DD--I have 3 dancers, I know the "pain" of dance costs!

I also recommend Discount Dance. Also $50 isn't too bad for a pair of jazz sneakers. My first pair cost me over $80!

Another vote for Discount Dance.

My DD13 has been in dance since 2 1/2 and that's were I have bought all her ballet, jazz, jazz sneakers & character shoes, all her leotards and all her tights. I usually do a big order in September and get her tights then for competitions & performances since she's been wearing her hole ridden pink ballet tights for a couple of years to class and refuses to put new ones on, she even washes them by hand.

Her pointe shoes I go to a store near me that is owned by a former ABT ballerina and my DD loves going there and talking to her

I just ordered from discount dance for the first time this week and thought the leotards were alot nicer then the target ones we bought in the past but they do run small. my daughter weares a 8-10 usually and that size leotard was to small, had to send back and the shipping for the exchange both ways is going to be almost as much as the leotard so you might want to order up a size.

I will also add that you might want to find out what the dance teacher recommends, prefers or even requires.
