Budget for Souveniers and "Other"?

Just curious how much you all budget for souveniers for your DL trips? We have a 5 year old boy and we're planning on allowing him $100 to spend on things he choose (with our approval, of course). I figured another $60 for the PhotoPass and $100 for other items I'll want to buy for him (i.e. sweatshirts, etc.). DH and I probably won't be interested in any souveniers for ourselves. Does that seem about right for a decent souvenier budget?

Also, I'm trying to think of everything we could potentially spend money on while there. What am I forgetting? Our list:

Hotel
Airfare
Luggage
Park Tickets
Meals
Souveniers
Transportation
Cat boarding
Other???

Tips for housekeeping, bell services if you use them, etc.

Remember that souvenirs have to be brought home. And fake "blasters" and swords can't be brought in carryons (though we got a lax LAX (ha) TSA agent who took pity on us once). So you have to have a checked bag to carry all those sorts of things, and it really should be hard-sided to help protect them. We've carried the light spinner things in carryon no problem, and pins and such, though. Also note that snowglobes canNOT be carried on board a plane, because even the tiny ones do NOT have the ounce markings on them.

I'm sure your budget is fine...at first it seemed really high, but then I remembered that we buy stuff on most visits. if we were doing a One Big Trip, that's more along the lines of what the budget would have looked like.

Little tip, though...if you have a Disney Store, or if one of those outlets comes near you (I am absolutely blanking on the phrase to google for the list, so please someone help me out here), or if you look on disneyshopping.com, you will often find cute souvenirs that are likely less expensive than you can find in the parks. Many people like bulking up with some cheaper souvenirs while there, to spring on their kids and lessen the "wants" for the expensive stuff.

Oh, little tip, there are a few versions of lightsabers. The least expensive one, and the one most age appropriate, is the SAME thing you can get at Target for about $2 cheaper ($5 if it's on clearance at Target). It's a great saber. No noise or lights, but it has a belt clip and you can absolutely abuse it. Next best, IMO, is a light up, makes noise, light blue lightsaber, with Mickey motifs on it. It's about $12, and also has a belt clip.

The other lightsabers I cannot recommend for a 5 year old, because they have NO beltclips, they are HUGE, heavy, and so on. The build your own? I went against my feelings (we follow age recommendations for everything but Legos) and let DH and DS make one for DS's 4th birthday, and it was lost inside of 2 full days. Too heavy, no clip, and he handed it off to one of us, then we forgot about it...when we went back to the bench a few minutes later? It was gone gone gone.

Ok that was a whole lot written on lightsabers! :rotfl:

If you buy him stuff that makes sound, know that the sound can get annoying. DH tends to carry a little bitty screwdriver in his pocket...coincidentally, sometimes when the sound is getting annoying and DH holds the noisy toy, the toy seems to temporarily "break"...seems to go along with him messing with the battery compartment. Funny, weird little coincidence, LOL. :upsidedow

Good tips!

Yes, we're bringing an extra carryon (packed in the suitcase) so we have room to bring things back. Sounds like with some items we'll pack/check the souveniers and pack clothes or whatever in the carryon.

I had to laugh at your comments about the light sabers. My son has 3 of them already and they are nothing but trouble. He will NOT be getting another light saber under any circumstances!!

Souvenir budget is what you're comfortable with.

Other items to budget in (if they apply):
Lockers
Stroller/Wheelchair rentals
Photos from select On-Rides
Photos from character meals
Tips: Sit-down restaurants, housekeeping, shuttle/taxis

We always keep a small amount of cash on us....there used to be a few snack carts not set up for "cards" (but I thought I read somewhere they we fixing that) & of course you'll need cash if you're into pressed pennies.

Hope that helps!!

Meals eaten at the parks/hotels- you can look up the menus & prices here: http://allears.net/dlr/din/menu/menus.htm
That can help budget for meals.

:goodvibes Just walk him quickly out of Space Mountain, then, as it empties into a shop, and lightsabers are among the first you will see. That's if he goes on Space...if he doesn't, then just walk quickly past Star Traders store.

DD7 can spend her money on anything she likes as long as we agree.:lmao: I get some debate over it then - "How can it be what I want if you have to agree...." ahhh, 7 year olds.

Anyway, don't forget Mouse Ears as a possibility. Can easily come out of the $100 if you want.

we say that when go as well and always end up with something, coffee mug, sweatshirt, hat, golf balls, heck even antenna toppers.

so keep an open mind on souvenirs, there is something for everyone.

I'm so excited... I was able to trade in my credit card point for $50 in build a bear gift cards, and I know there is coupons I can take with me for even better deals

I am also planning on getting the Mr. Potato Head parts at California Adventure, you can fill a bucket for $20, well I already have heads, so I don't need that bulky item. I heard they have hands that are holding mickey mouse Icecreams and stuff you can only get at Disneyland, so I am definitely getting a bucket. I think I'll play with it more than my daughter. hehe

Definitely get several pairs of arms. The hands aren't actually holding things, but they are in a position to hold Disney stuff, and the hands you get with normal sets cannot hold the Disney stuff. Right and left arms are different from each other, so make sure you get pairs, and a few of them! :)

If you need help putting things into the box, ask for help. The CMs that most of us encounter nearly live to cram as much stuff into the box as possible. If you're getting a ticket, put it in the suitcase for instance. Shake it down, make it fit! It's great fun, but make sure everyone knows you'll be there for awhile, so they don't get too antsy.

Our list:

Hotel - Make sure you factor in taxes and room fees
Airfare - Make sure you factor in fees to rent headsets, eat, use the bathroom
Luggage - Make sure you factor in fees for extra bags going home and god forbid the bags are overweight
Park Tickets - Make sure you factor in the cost to upgrade them to annual passes
Meals - Make sure you factor in tips, Does this include snacks? (Churros?)
Souveniers - Make sure you factor in the small stuff (pins, balloons, pressed pennies)
Transportation - Make sure you factor in tips if taking taxis or gas and insurance if you are renting a car
Cat boarding - Make sure you factor in the new sofa you will need to buy because your cats gonna be pissed you went to the mouse house without him!
Other??? - Make sure you factor in the price to play games at paradise pier, the $20K you need to join DVC, and the new arm and leg you will need to buy when you get home! :thumbsup2

Take a trip to the Disney Character Warehouse a few miles north of Disneyland. It's a clearance store of Disneyland merchandise often 20-70% off Disneyland store prices.

I don't know how close you may be to this temporary store front location, but here is one in WA.

Please see below for the link for all of the current permanent and temporary Disney Warehouse Sale locations.

:rotfl: Love it. Luckily the cat is too old and senile to even know what's going in (which is why we're boarding him in the first place!).

Definitely get lots of arms. The regular Potato Head arms don't hold the Disney stuff. The CMs are professionals at getting as much packed in as possible. I'd also do this earlier in the day before all the good stuff is gone. If you fill the giant Mr. Potato Head, then make sure you are heading back to the hotel first...that sucker is heavy!!!

A clever member here suggested picking up some dollar store glow sticks etc so that you can whip them out when darkness falls and the expensive Disney ones go on sale and are so tempting!

DS came home from school not too long ago saying that his teacher told him that if you put the glow sticks in the freezer as long as they're still glowing that they will keep and can be reused. We tried it and it worked!!

I find snacks are a bigger money-sink than souvenirs, personally. I mean, you're hungry anyway--sure, it's $4, but it's so pretty! ;)

If your family isn't susceptible to that then good for you! Me...I am. :flower3:

Are you counting games/etc. under souvenir money? Your son might like to play in the Penny Arcade, for example. ($5 can go a pretty long way in there though. :) )

Have a great trip!
