We're headed to DLR the first week of Dec 2017 (staying at Camelot Inn) and are planning to rent a car for one day to head down to Legoland. Our plan was to pick up the car first thing in the morning when they open at 7:30 am but it's very unlikely that we will have it back before they close at 6pm. This is at the Budget on West Katella. Does anyone know if they have an after hours car drop there? Or would we have to be there at 7:30 the next morning when they open to avoid paying for the second day? I don't rent cars very often. Should I be doing this differently?

Rent the car from 730am that day to 730am the next day. This solves the problem of trying to get it back before they close in the evening. This should work as long as you have a safe place to park the car overnight. There is usually a grace period of 30 minutes, after which they charge another day, so make sure you are up and ready to return the car on time the next morning! Cars are generally rented for 24 hours at a time, so if you use the car for one hour or the full 24 hours, you'll pay for the 24 hour (one day) rental either way.

Make sure to compare the cost of your rental to the cost of Uber or Lyft, just to make sure that you are getting the most cost effective deal.

I'd also suggest shopping around the rental companies. You would be surprised how they differ in different locations. For example, Hertz is almost always our go to when we rent from home, but when we went to Hawaii, Budget was the best deal by far. Deals can also vary by rental location. I.E. some airport locations will charge a premium for the convenience of having a rental right there. If you have the option, a downtown location can sometimes save you versus picking up at an airport.

The rate for 'same day return' is the same as a 24 hour rental.

BFF and I have been checking into the same sort of thing to go to USH. It appears that the only 'out of hours drop' is with Alamo in DTD. But their prices are higher than others.

The 'benefit' about renting with Alamo is that, if your drop off day is a Disney Day, you're already at DTD when you drop it off and you can just head into the parks.

i have booked with national car rental on W Katella and am dropping off after they close at 6pm
cheaper than alamo in DTD
