Just when I had my finances on track and I was aggressively paying down my debt, I get laid off. After being laid off for a year I worked at this job for over 20 months. There was 15 of us that got laid off because the boss wanted to "trim the fat" and wanted the remaining overworked employees to work some more. I'm probably better off because I was making minimum wage after you factor in all the hours I worked and didn't get overtime. I'm mainly upset because at this rate I will never be able to afford to have more children. :sad1:
Thanks for letting me whine.

*hugs*

I totally get it. DH and I recently sat down and discussed not having any more children because of where we are at financially (not to mention DH isn't getting any younger). So DS will be our only child. I'm a little sad...but when I look at the big picture...once our debts are paid off, we'll be able to take a yearly family vacation. :) And that to me is the most important thing in my life as a momma...is being able to give my son some great experiences. :)

Good luck. You WILL get that debt paid off in the end! *hugs*

I'm so sorry you got laid off. :grouphug:

I think that reviewing your financial situation regarding having additions to your family is both impressive and sad. Impressive because you clearly understand that having kids is a huge job and kids deserve to be in a family that can afford them financially thus (hopefully) a little less stressful environment. Being a responsible parent isn't easy, there are those that either don't care or have a "whatever" attitude and sadly, our society is partly raising those children financially.
Sad for you in the current situation/decision. I am keeping you all in my prayers and wishing that your situation will turnaround, and very quickly... so that you can again re-evaluate (?) that choice to hold off/not have more children.
I really want to wish you the very best of luck and have my fingers crossed for you (and all those in similar situations).
The economy is still so scary right now despite the recent "rise" in the dow, it doesn't means more jobs and for many it still means layoffs.........:sad2:

(((Hugs)))) and I hope you find something that pays better and a boss who does not try and take advantage of you in concerns to overtime!

 So sorry, OP. Fingers crossed here you will be able to get another, even better job very soon.

Did you say you worked lots of hours & didnt get paid overtime? If you worked over 40 hours in a week & didnt get paid overtime I strongly suggest you call your states employment enforcement division. There are Federal & State rules about when overtime should be paid. Check with them to see if your former employer has been violating overtime rules & short changing their workers. If the employees are due money the state will force the employer to anti up. Good luck.

Gosh, I'm sorry. I hope something comes along right away.

If OP was salaried the laws are different. DBF is salaried, he puts in 40-60 hours per week depending on his work load. He's also on mandatory furlow days (not a state employee) so he has to take 1 non-paid day off per pay period...which wouldn't be bad at all, except he has to stay later other days to make up the work he "missed". It really sucks, BUT he has a job and I don't! So we are happy he's still working. :)

OP I'm sorry, I hope you find another position ASAP!

My husband got laid off from 3 good paying jobs in a 4 year period and at the end he found a job that he totally loves and it is the best paying job he has ever had.. Just remember, when one door closes, another door opens.

I bolded above. I agree w/ this poster, however, it does not hurt to make sure if you are/were a salaried employee to make sure the STATE considers you salaried. A LOT of employers tell thier employee's that they are salaried, however, when you review the state/federal labor laws, you will find that aside from a sales or owner type position, most "salaried" positions require that you have some sort of managerial responsibilities and authorities. not all, and of course, I can only speak of Virginia law, but I know a lot of people that think they are not entitled to overtime because their boss calls them "salaried" just cuz the boss calls them that, does not always mean the are a true salaried. it usually requires that your formal job description be compared to the state/federal labor codes... not saying this is the case all of the time, however, it never hurts to verify!

G/L OP --- I hope things turn around quickly for you!

Thank you so much everyone, it really means a lot to me! :) Thank you for the advice. I was a salaried employee and I worked in the HR dept. so I know that unfortunately I wasn't entitled to overtime by working long hours.

My DH works every week 55-65 hours a week and gets not 1 penny OT. He is a hourly paid driver for a local trucking company. I wish he got paid OT because we would be so much better off, because either he would get a bigger check or work less hours and be home more with the family. I sure wish I knew how to tell for sure what the rules really are. We are in NY state.

OP, I feel your pain. I got laid off 3 months and one day before I got married. I've been out of work (from a FT job) for a year and a half. We can't even think about having children until I find a job. I found out this past week that my old employer who laid me off hired somebody brand new for my position. I was crushed...

Hopefully things will get better for you soon!
