Budget Buster- Eyeglasses

December of '08 I had an eye exam ($80) and got a pair of glasses for almost $400 at Lenscrafters (frames were $100) and that was with $100 off. Within 2 months my glasses started to have little icicle cracks all along the outside of the frame. I took the glasses back and they told me it would be $200 to replace thm. I dealt with it until a couple of weeks ago (and by this time the cracks have pretty much grown to cover the entire lense). I wear my glasses the entire time I'm at work and some at home. I went back for an eye exam (showed my dental insurance card which I found out online gives me $5 off on eye exams) so paid $75, went home and ordered a pair of sunglasses and eyeglasses with anti-reflective coating for a total of $125 from www.39dollarglasses.com (and I got 4% back with Sunshine). Each pair was about $40 but I paid extra for the anti-reflective coating and my prescription strength required the lenses to be thinned out so that was an extra $20. They only use polycarbonate lenses. I got them less than a week after ordering too. They're great glasses [quality of frames and the clarity of the lenses] and I'm sending in my original frames to be fitted for lenses through them for $39. I would've never known about getting glasses online without the DIS!! :woohoo:

Oh, and if you really hate the way the frames look on you (which I know what styles look best on my face but I think some people don't like the idea of not being able to try them on) you can ship them back and they will recut the lenses into a new pair for you or refund your money minus 30% so you're not completely at a loss if you don't like them.

DD6 got her first pair of glasses in December. The doctor strongly recommended polycarbonate lenses, thinner lenses and to cut down on the "coke bottle" effect. Just the lenses were $140 per pair of glasses. So with frames, I ended up paying about $440 for two pair. I figured she'd need a pair and a spare! I was shocked by the polycarbonate lens price, but I didn't go for the cheapest frames either. I wanted the frames to be good quality that would stand up to the abuse of a 6 year old.

I have those lenses because I have very thin frames and regular lenses would not work in them!
