Well, we were finally feeling like we were catching up and ready for Christmas Shopping and one of my dogs developed an eye ulcer. We fought to get it under control for 2 weeks but it ruptured and we had to have his eye removed yesterday. Poor baby, but we were told that it is a pretty easy recovery for him. Now I am hoping for some overtime for my husband as I have to take off work to care for him for I don't know how long. My parents are helping baby sit him, but I don't want to burn them out.

Poor Fur baby. Wishing a him Speedy recovery and you lots of OT. Vet bills can get expensive.

{{Hugs}} for your furbaby! I'm sure that he will recover rapidly. Dogs are very resilient. I know how expensive vet bills can get. My dog is in congestive heart failure (diagnosed 20 months ago). She sees a cardiologist every 6 weeks to the tune of $300+ per visit. That doesn't include meds. But taking care of their needs is the promise we make in return for the unconditional love that our pets offer us.

Thanks. We just got home and he seems to be feeling much better than before the surgery!! They said that he was in so much pain before that recovery would be better than expected. *(fingers crossed)*

Oh no poor fur baby! I hope he recovers soon so you can go back to work. One of our fur babies needed ACL surgery, we know 50% of the dogs that have the surgery will need it again. Here we are hoping we are not in that 50% it was so pitiful to have to help him to recover he hated it :guilty:.

I hope he is on the good side of that 50% also!

Good luck with the health of your baby too. Sounds like you have your hands full often with having to go every 6 weeks.

I can only imagine what that cost was! I'm sorry your pup had to go through that, but hopefully he'll feel back to his old self in no time!

So far it has been around $2000. He will be on eye drops the rest of his lift to try our best to keep his remaining eye healthy.

He is doing better and seems to be getting around with not much of a balance problem. He does run into door frames and walls at times, but I think that has more to do with the cone he has to wear.

We love our pets. I probably spent close to $8000.00 on Daisy, my Frenchie the last 4 years of her life.

We love ours too. They told us when we brought him home that he would be fine and we could start leaving him alone. HAHA I still haven't and he came home last Thursday, 5 days ago. My parents are dog sitting while I work. I work at Parents as Teachers doing home visits with families so I only am gone 2-4 hours a day, and I am in and out all day. I am lucky. I missed a lot last week, and I have a full week this week. Thursday I have to leave him alone for about 1 1/2 hours on Thursday and I am already scared of it. He doesn't even want to be in a room alone-I think he is scared still.

I have a fur-baby lab that we adopted when he was 1 years old. We knew he had glaucoma when we first got him in one eye which had to be removed immediately. He was in so much pain before the surgery. Afterwards he recovered quickly and he did great. Unfortunately even with drops the glaucoma showed up in his other eye 11 months later and he had surgery on that one too. They were able to save that eye though he doesn't really see anything out if it. He is blind but you wouldn't believe it. His other senses really kicked in and took over. His sense of hearing is his strongest believe it or not. We travel with him and just took him to Florida in a rental home - he adjusted in a very short time period to the new environment and navigated like a pro. I'm sure your fur baby will do great.

Thank you for the encouragement. They did lots of test on his good eye (after the surgery was over) and it just showed borderline dry eye, so that is what the drops are for. They thought that there was an underlying cause to the bad eye since it started improving but then got worse. He was in so much pain and it was so bad they did not want to do any testing on it before they removed it. His vet said she was assuming it was glaucoma, but couldn't test for it since his eye had already ruptured. The specialist said it ultimately didn't matter what caused it and just to monitor his remaining eye carefully.

Hugs to your pup!!! What kind of dog is he? We actually just went through the SAME thing 2 weeks ago. His eye went from slightly red to this huge pink cauliflower looking growth coming out of an eye socket in a matter of days. Before they went in, they warned us that it looked like a tumor (I had also just assumed glaucoma) and if it was affecting the optic nerve, it could affect the brain. We opted not to do any further testing because our dog is 12 years old. When she went in, she said it was all contained in the eye, but if it grows back, then we will know. The first 24 hours were rough with him home, and I was feeling so terrible about the whole situation! I think he was just really drugged though, and now he's himself again. He just got his stitches out yesterday.

He is a 7 1/2 year old Shih Tsu. They initially were going to send him home about 3 hours after surgery, but decided to wait until the next morning to do the testing on his other eye. He came home with a much brighter affect and attitude than before it was removed. He is just scared to be alone still. He gets his stitches removed on Saturday morning. I'm still amazed that his eye will stick closed forever after just 10-12 days stitched. Do they do something to kind of help that beyond stitches? I feel bad for him every time I look at him too.

So glad to hear that he's doing better. Your vet probably accepts a credit card called CareCredit that can also be used for humans for eyeglasses, dentists, etc. By charging over $200, you are eligible for either 6, 12, or 18 months interest free financing, it can really come in handy.

Hugs to your doggie! Four years ago my sweet Scout Dog had to have back surgery. She would have been paralyzed without the surgery, so it was the right choice. The surgery was about $4,000. Now she has cushings disease, which may have been caused by the steroids after the surgery. Her meds are around $200 a month. She's a budget buster, but we love her!
