Budget Buster: DGS20months and the laptop

So DGS was watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse movies on the laptop on Wednesday night just like he does every night. He got his bottle of water with the sippy-type lid and was drinking it. I didn't think anything of it and went to the kitchen to get me a drink too. When I got back, the laptop had stripes going across the screen and there was water all in the keys! About a minute later, it went to the black screen. Is it gone forever? Can I let it dry out and then turn it on and it work? Is there anything at all that can be done to help it?

There are many factors involved, but I would not get your hopes up. First, DO NOT TURN IT ON until you have tried to dry it out. You can try to bury it in rice for a few days to dry it out, but likely water has reached places that won't dry out like that.

I would try to find someone that know what they are doing and have thme take it apart and try to dry it out. Depending on the age of the LT, it may not be worth it to pay someone to do it.

A cup of coffee was accidentally spilled on my old laptop and it was toast. The good thing was my local IT store was able to retrieve absolutely everything off the drive (all docs, email history and address book, photos and itunes) and hold it on their server until I got a new one, and they transferred it all on.

It cost about 300$, but it was worth it!

In most cases the data can be retrieved from the disk drive.

If you leave the computer off and let it dry out, there is a chance it will come back to life. But you may need to leave it for two weeks. Take the battery out.

Turning it upside down and putting it over a register (if you have forced hot air heating) will probably dry it out the most quickly. But don't put it on a radiator (hot water or steam heat).

AND, if it is a total loss and have to replace it. Take a look at your home owners/renters insurance. Not sure if it would be worth it for you. But I was just looking into ours due to a move, and our will cover loss/damage for laptops. But if your deductible is high enough than it would not be worth it.

I had a water spill on my lap top, I took out the battery and blow dried it, most aptops have a protector so when water hits it it shuts off.

My DS brought a puppy over one day and it pee'd right in the middle of DH's laptop! It was horrible...but after taking it to a computer repair center, they were able to take it apart and dry it out. They said we needed a new keyboard and we ordered it but a few days later, DH turned it on and it was working again. Then 2 days after that, he accidentally spilled a whole cup of Dr. Pepper on it! I mean, really?? How does this happen? We ended up taking it and getting a quote to fix it ($800) and then called our insurance company. Luckily we have a computer rider on our homeowner's insurance and they covered it completely and sent me a check for $700 (minus deductible). We bought a new laptop but just recently (couple of months later) DH turned on the laptop and it works just the same as it did before all the madness. So....it may not all be a loss. It might be worth it to take it in to a repair center. If nothing else, they can retrieve your data for you!
