Well, yesterday I noticed my wisdom tooth was a little achy, and being the ding dong I am...I thought it would be okay until Monday. WELL...as of right now my gums are starting to swell (mildly) and its a little more painful. I know he will have to put me on antibiotics before pulling it. BUT I cant get in until AT LEAST Monday now, and I have work and church this weekend. Anyone have ideas on how to keep the swelling down until I can get in on Monday and hand them my checkbook? LOL!

Try taking an Aleve. It should help a little but if it is infected then it may not do too much good.

Hope you feel better. Tooth pain can be as bad as giving birth.

I know...its just now starting to get bad...so I took some Ibuprofen, since that (Ive heard) helps with swelling as well. I just dont wanna go to work or church and look like a pufferfish...LOL!

Does your dentist have an emergency number on their voicemail? They may be able to call in a prescription (sunday) to hold you over until you can get in.

I agree w/PP. I work for a dentist and we leave our dentists' phone numbers on the answering machine and they call patients in some antibiotics until they can see them on Monday in cases like this!! Watch it very closly and if it starts to swell into your eye (upper tooth) or down into your throat (lower tooth), you will need to get to the emergency room if you cannot get in touch with your dentist b/c it can be very dangerous when the swelling starts to travel like that, so does the infection!!

I work for an oral surgeon so wisdom teeth I know about! Start with salt water in a cup. Do this 3+ times today. You can also use a capful of peroxide in a cup of mouthwash. This acts like a antibiotic mouth wash. You can and should take 800 mg of advil or mortin if you aren't allergic too. It will help with swelling. I would call an oral surgeon, not your dentist first thing. Many will answer calls over the weekend too. They may even schedule you to come in on Monday am. If the surgeon dosen't call you back today, start calling one (or 3) first thing tomorrow. Many times wisdom teeth go thru your medical insurance, so if you need referrals also call your PCP. Good luck and feel better soon!

I'm a dentist, and hopefully your dentist will have instructions on their answering machine about what to do in this type of situation. This type of swelling sounds like it stems from an infection; advil (ibuprofen) or aleve will not do anything other than relieve some pain. You need to get the infection treated, and swelling is not a good sign. I'd get in touch with your dentist (or an oral surgeon) asap. Hope you get better soon!

Well, my dentist did not return my calls...but I do have some penicillin, so I am taking that until tomorrow. I am also drinking hot green tea and taking ibuprofen, which is keeping the pain down and swelling about the same. They gave me penicillin last time, and the same dose, so I know I am okay on that end. Im just ready to get it pulled! TY SO MUCH for all your advice!
