I remember the days of 80/20, no copays, just pay as you go. But insurance got nuts, and docs charged more and got less and the insurance companies took over and it is now insane. The docs get hardly anything, and the insurance companies are raking in money hand over fist. There has to be a better way.
There are still 80/20 policies out there (at least, there are in Minnesota, I don't know about Jersey). When I was growing up we only had major medical. My parents paid out of pocket for everything until they hit $10,000, then insurance paid everything. $10,000 was a lot of money in the 1970s, and we never hit it. Coverage was through my Dad's employer and they paid 100% of the premium. But we seldom went to the doctor as kids - we couldn't afford it - and we were a fairly middle class family. I broke my wrist as a kid (just a hairline fracture) and we just bound it up - never got it XRayed - couldn't afford the emergency room trip. I only know I broke it because years later, I had it XRay'd again for carpal tunnel surgery. (But we were pretty sure I broke it at the time).
Coverage through my work for our family of 4 is about $60 a month. Coverage through my DH work for our family would be almost a $1000 a month. I'm thankful that I have good insurance. Its also one reason I continued to work after having DS.
I'm in the process of job hunting now and benefits will play a big role in my decision.
