Budget buster- car repair - advice?

Well, that is all do to Federal Regulations for safety. Cars are supposed to be "softer" to absorb impact, so that the impact isn't transferred to the people in the car. So parts are designed now to crumple on impact, not be rigid.
And environmental regulations on automotive paints have driven the price through the roof. The cost of just the paint......for my 1965 Mustang... was $2,500 for the entire car. Not the painting, JUST THE PAINT
In theory though a styrofoam bumper should be much cheaper than a metal bumper. Yet those styrofoam bumpers are thousands. They should over a non painted styrofoam bumper if the paint is what is expensvie.

The cost is to repair the support structure behind the styrofoam bumper.

So for your 65 Mustang do you have to swap out the metal bumpers for styrofoam ones or is it grandfathered in?
Nope. But those metal bumpers aren't nearly as much protection as the styrofoam ones. And I would probably have body damage too.
