My DH is turning the big 40 on March 5. I really want to plan something for him, but we are on a tight budget, especially with our disney trip happening the week after his birthday. I am not a party person, our house is pretty small and we don't entertain a lot, so I am a bit out of my element here. Would it be tacky to invite all of our friends to meet us out at a local bar to celebrate? I was thinking of sending out very informal email, letting people know it's his birthday and to stop by if they get a chance to wish him well? I don't expect gifts or anything like that, just want to get together and celebrate. I am open to any suggestions!

Great idea! We do this all the time amongst friends and family. Use evite to send online invitations if you like. It's free. Tell him Happy B-Day from the Dis.

I'd go with simple but fun party. maybe cookout if it gets warm enough you never know in march or a pasta party with some theming around something he loves.

I personally wouldn't want to invite people to celebrate and then pay their own way. I would throw a small, inexpensive party. Pick a weekend night, send evites to save the cost of stamps, buy only beer/wine, serve veggies, chips, dips, cheese and crackers...maybe some wings or something else you feel comfortable making that dh would love...we all can give you lots of great, easy ideas. Buy some birthday napkins and plain white plastic plates, throw a nice tablecloth on your table and you're done. :goodvibes

what i did for my DH , who by the way shares the same birthday as yours, : 0 ) is tell our friends and family I was taking him to this restaurant at this time on this date to celebrate his birthday. If you would like to join, let me know by this date and i'll add your name to the ressies. Friends and family know everyone's on a budget so i think they'll understand. If you would like to accommodate those that can't make it, have cake and coffee back at your place after the restaurant.

Give the closest friends a call and invite them over for a get together. We are always inviting people for cookouts (doesn't matter that it is winter). I make many appetizers and people basically graze while they talk. Lots of fun and doesn't have to be expensive. Just control the number of guests to fit your budget.
