Any idea of when it will begin or how long it will take? A few blog sites says 2020.

I'd bet it won't start until later in the year. And plan on it lasting at least a year or longer.

How do they handle 100% occupancy?
They take rooms out of service prior to the 11 month window with the expectation of them being down for maintenance. Therefore, they can't be booked. In reality only 51 out of 52 weeks of points is sold for a resort so that means a room can be taken out of service for 1 week a year without issue, which if not really taken out for 1 year that means it can keep banking forward to a degree so the 2nd year it can come out for 2 weeks of service (though it can't go on forever).

VWL is such a small resort (less than 140 villas), a year seems like an awfully long time to refurbish. But then again, a refurbishment is not something that generates revenue for Disney, so it probably won't be a priority to keep it moving along quickly.

I'd guess 6 months tops.

Anyone know if the renovations are going to proceed as planned for this year, or are they postponing them?

I'm curious about this, too. I thought the renovations were on a schedule of X years. Are refurbs contractual?

Not that I'm aware of.

I thought the renovations were on a schedule of X years.
Back in 2015, DVD shortened the cycle between full refurbishments from 24 years to 14 years. The new cycle has some kind of work every 7 years which alternates between soft goods and full refurbishment.

The schedule is not contractual. They can't use the money set aside for refurb for anything else, but they don't have hard deadlines.
That was my understanding, too, so I was hoping that meant they'd still move forward with refurbishments, but I haven't heard anything about them starting.

The SSR refurbishment has restarted. I suspect they will delay those that haven't actually started yet.

That would legitimately raise the question of why however. The Capital reserves 100% pay for the refurbs and has been collected. There's no legit monetary reason not to and it actually is a good time with lower occupancy rates. Very different than say the SE refurb/redo and several other projects that have been nixed.

Possibly social distancing issues in that at SSR you shut down a building and much of the materials movement is outside, whereas you can shut off a floor, but all the stuff moves through the main lobby.

spitballin' here.

I expect the opposite - as long as occupancy continues to be low they should get a move on it. Reports out of SSR are that they’re working on 3 buildings at a time right now; I believe they were doing 2 at a time pre-COVID.

I think as long as WL is closed and they are moving people to the villas the refurb will be delayed indefinitely.

It is worth mentioning that they ARE working on the WL renovations (closed hotel rooms).
