We were in Orlando a few weeks ago and stayed at the Grand Cypress. We had a bad experience with biting flies. These were kind of a brownish orange. You could feel it when they bit but the next day there were large red welts. The itching was pretty intense also. We've been home for two weeks not and I can still, faintly, see the welts on my legs. We've never been bitten by anything in Orlando. Does anyone know what these little monsters are?

I am not sure what kind of flies those are but I think those are the ones that bit me. I didn't get a close look though at the fly that bit me the last time, but mine started off as a small red dot (almost like a bruise right beneath the skin) and welted up by the next day. I too still see faint marks a few weeks later. I got three on my ankle this last trip and 8 in December when I went. Painful buggers and they did itch me fairly badly by comparison to most other bites.

Sounds like the same thing. One, out of about 10, of the bites I got did bruise. The others welted and looked like a blood vessel had broken. I was just curious as to what they were. I had never seen them before. I got bitten by one of them by Splash Mountain but the rest were at the Grand Cypress, at dusk, by the pool, before a storm. Next visit I'll bring bug stray. In about previous visits a had never even seen a bug.

Sounds like you were in Florida during our wonderful yellowfly season.
They are yellowish-brown and very aggressive! They are also painful!
Yellowfly season lasts about 3 weeks here, then they're gone.
