Brought home some of the Fort - literally

Our last trip of 2008 was the Fort for Thanksgiving, then our camper stayed the winter at a friend's house. We picked her up last Sunday and finally popped her up this evening after work to play around and clean stuff up. When I moved the awning mat I realized that we hadn't shaken it out very well when leaving the Fort - I have a good handful or two of Fort sand...and of course I don't have the heart to toss it out into the lawn like I would with any other dirt.

Our next trip to WDW is not to the Fort, and we're looking at NEXT spring for another Fort trip - will I ever be able to make it a whole 'nother YEAR???

I brought home a nice little piece of Fort history last trip: I went exploring along the old rail right-of-way and found a spike laying in the underbrush. I was thrilled. I had seen other spikes that were still driven into ties, and didn't want to tamper with those few remaining pieces of 'original fabric' but this was just laying there and I felt it was ripe to be claimed for a souvenir, so I did. Pretty cool thing for a railfan, and a Fort fan. It is about 2/3 the size of a normal spike. Anyway, yes, I have some little pieces of the Fort around.

When we went to the fort in December we brought home some of the fort too. When my husband was unloading the back of the truck he found one of the little lizards from there. I was shocked that the thing stayed in the back of the truck for 12 hours up I95. It was very cold when we got home and the poor thing wasn't moving much. We took it to the local pet store to see what to do with it and they kept it and let it loose in the store. They said they let little lizards live loose in the store to eat the bugs and crickets that get away. I will do some checking the next time we pull out of the fort for little hitch hikers.

Once you've been to the Fort, your stuff NEVER seems to get rid of that coquina sand!!

Man a year is along time! I think I'd bottle that dirt and keep it as a reminder of places been and will be again. ;)

I had three frogs that hitched a ride from my house to the fort under my awning. Wait, we were taking things home right?

Wow! Historic railroad spikes, lizards. frogs..my little sand doesn't hold a candle to these "souvenirs"!

And, yeah, I'm on the lookout for a little bottle of some sort :thumbsup2

Hi Kristin.......how did you like your first season in your A liner? I think you should join the rest of us at the Fort in October. We too will have celebrated our 15th a few weeks before we arrive.

Hey Mrsscooter! We had a GREAT first season camping with the A :thumbsup2 Thanks for asking! Do you have spring fever yet? The weather Friday and yesterday was awesome - today, well, waaah. Any local plans yet for 2009? I SO have the itch to get out there. We have our first reservations set for late April in RI - I can't wait! We're also planning on taking a trip to Washington D.C. this summer - there's a nice looking regional park in VA that we picked up a brochure for at a rest stop on our way home last fall - so that should be a lot of fun. Sadly, we won't be able to join you at the Fort in October since 2009 vacation time is all spoken for already (DC, the Finger Lakes in NY, and a trip to Fort Myers to visit my parents) - we did manage to sneak in a long weekend trip for our anniversary when the airfares went down a few weeks ago, and we're using a friend's DVC points at the monstrosity that I was just cursing a few months ago when riding on the boat from FtW :rolleyes1 So we're looking ahead to 2010 for our next trip to the Fort.
