I also have a Brother Embroidery Machine, and this is probably what you need... Brother PED Basic to use the embroidery design that you purchased... it is $114 on Amazon...

That will allow you to transfer the design to the card so that you can use it on your machine (assuming that the design that you bought is in the .pes format).
You will use it over and over again. I use mine all the time. If you ever want to download FREE designs from the internet you will need this. I always use white for my bobbin. It is your tension, but check that there is nothing in the bobbin casing. Even a tiny thread will effect it. Have you adjusted your bobbin tension (requires opening that plate on the arm where the bobbin sits)?
The whole thing is just a learning curve and getting to know your machine. But if you can't fix it in time for your trip then you actually could change out the bobbin thread color to get the appearance right.
