Aisling, youse are my SHEro! Awesome post about OUR Brooklyn!
:thumbsup2

My old siggie was "Brooklyn, it's not just where I'm from it's who I am". It's a theme I live on. Brooklyn people are HONEST, shoot from the hip, LOYAL, proud and true. I honestly miss that here in the South. Being from Brooklyn made me who I am... and I LOVE who I am!

...or should I say "who I YAM?" :rotfl:

I love Brookyn but honestly stayed only on the side that goes directly to Manhattan. I think I went to Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst twice in my life. I lived for Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights because I WAS a yuppie back then, an artsy fartsy yuppie at that~ :cool1: so it was right up my allie. I plan to go back in May and show my son MY New York.

crazy, I hope your girls love my hometown as much as I did. Their budget sounds okay, I actually paid $800 for my apartment 20 years ago! It's gone condo now.

Bay Ridge has everything in walking distance, Brooklyn Heights is just like Manhattan - along with the high prices. Everyone pretty much gave all the good areas.

Aisling - I'm in Marine Park too! We got to meet up one day.

Meant no offense to anyone who was brought up or lived anywhere in Brooklyn. I should have figured on a bit of backlash. I lived in the Bronx for a short time. Doesn't mean I'd suggest 2 young women move there. Although there are some beautiful parts of the Bronx. I was asking Dh who grew up, went to school, lived and worked in Brooklyn over 28 years. As I also said in my post there are good and bad parts in every area.

Myst

Hi all, I'm back from my little city jaunt. Here is an update. The girls looked at four apartments in Bed Sty, Williamsburg, Bensonhurst (I think) and Sunset Park. 2 were ruled out right away because of the area. One place they loved the apartment, but my daughter didn't care for the area, she just didn't feel safe. Another apartment they were so so about, but it would be doable. Again though my daughter wasn't thrilled with the area. It was right near an industrial park, she said there also wasn't really any shops or grocery stores nearby, just one deli.

I feel better about the whole move now. It sounds like they are thinking things through, keeping safety a priority. My brother also suggested they look at certain areas of the Bronx and said he'll ask around if anyone hears of anything in NYC, Brooklyn or the Bronx.

I live and work in Bed-Stuy.

OP, have them look at Clinton Hills and Brooklyn Heights.

That is a nice area in my opionion. My brother lived there for 5 years and I visited him several times and would go out very early and walk and sightsee alone and always felt very safe there.

I have lived in Brooklyn for the past 25 years. (originally from New Jersey) You have alot of good advice given to you here. There are alot of great places to live in Brooklyn, Sheepshead Bay is undergoing alot of building and has tons of new apartments. I really like Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights too with all the beautiful Brownstones. Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst are great areas too. You really have alot to choose from here. We love it. Especially the close proximity to Manhattan.

Very interesting thing happened...

I posted some replies to robin, myst, disunc, disneyjunkie, and robmom, and some general info, and my post has gone poof!

So I'll try it again.
Myst, no need to apologize. Everyone has an opinion and you're just sharing yours.
disneyjunkey since you live in Bed-Stuy, I think you would agree that Bed-Stuy has had a reputation problem in the past with high crime rate, but noe it's a revitalized neighborhood. I think what's happening in Bed-Stuy is what has happened to Ft. Greene, which used to be high crime. I live in Ft. Greene for 4 years when it was downright bad, but it's now the place to be. Crime is way way down, businesses are doing well, and it's really a cultural neighborhood. The only problem is that since it's such a cool place to live now, rents are going up. Disneyjunkie, do yoiu see this happening in Bed-Stuy? I have friends from college putting money together to buy a small building there, because they love it there and they see the positive changes happening. I predict in a few more years, Bed-Stuy is going to be hard to move in to because many young families and yuppies are buying everything up. It's going to be a highly desireable area to live in.

Robin, you da bomb, lady! I'd love to meet you in Brooklyn sometime. C'mon on over with your son for a cup of cawfee!

Robmom, you, too!

To the fireman, I lived in Canarsie when I first got married, both my kids were born in Downstate Med.

I love Brooklyn so much, I can talk about it all day!

They might be able to find something in Riverdale and I wouldn't rule out parts of Queens. I used to live in Kew Gardens and it was easy to get to the city. Also, there is a lot going on in Forest Hills. Long Island City and Astoria are also good places to look.

I love that. ::yes:: So true.
