My sister, 12 years old, was just diagnosed with having both pneumonia and bronchitis! I've never heard of having both at same time. Does anyone have any experience with this. My mother and I are quite concerned. Doctor is saying she'll be clear by the end of the week, but the cough has been around for several weeks (had been mis-diagnosed a few times). Thanks for feedback.

I wouldn't worry about it. She probably had bronchitis and developed a pneumonia on top of it. I think the pneumonia diagnosis can scare people. My son has a tendency to deveop pneumonias and it freaks some people out. As long as she is getting proper treatment it should get better soon.

I would just keep an eye out for patterns of illness. Many people with these kind of respiratory issues end up with an asthma diagnosis.

Hi! Last Fall, DD - then 10 - had the same thing, only hers was classified as "walking pneumonia". She ended up going through two rounds of antibiotics, went on an inhaler for the month, and was eventually back to normal. She was just exhausted, though, and went to bed by 7 or 7:30 for most of the month. She's had a few colds since, but nothing major came of them. The doctors told us to watch that because she could develop asthma symptoms more easily now. We've had no problems and it's been over a year!

Thank you. Yes, exhaustion seems to be one of the main factors with my sister as well.

DS has had this a few times. He has other medical conditions that made it possible but if your sister gets rest and proper treatment she will be fine. I was wondering about an asthma diagnosis too. The only people I know who get both have asthma also. I hope she is well soon. Lots of fluids and a cool steam humidifier at bedside really help DS.

I keep saying rest to her! I think she got this way in the first place because she never wants to sleep!

There is a young girl (I think she is 9) on my son's swim team that has the same thing -- Bronchitus and Pneumonia. My wife deals with medical evaluations daily and said this is faily common.

Follow the doctor's recommendations and she will be fine! :thumbsup2

I am one that gets bronchitis and pneumonia maybe every other year and sometimes every year. Right now Im laid up with a severe upper respiratory infection that can develop into more if I'm not careful. Make sure she drinks plenty of fluids and I would also gets some hot fluids because it helps with the cough in my opinon. Watch her carefully and make sure all the meds are taken because it can linger after the meds are gone. Now at 27, I have to be hit with some serious antibiotics and steriods to bring me back after an episode and yes I also have asthma. If you have any questions or just need reassurance please feel free to PM me.

I hope your sister is better soon.

Thank you all for your feedback, advice, and words of support. :grouphug:

Yes it is possible. I had double pneumonia and bronchitis in '97. I was misdiagnosed 3 times before I finally found a doctor who started me on the right stuff. Within a few days I was feeling 1000 x better. Oh yea, this went on for about a month before the correct diagnosis. :confused3

I hope she feels better soon! :thumbsup2 Tell her to rest and drink plenty of liquids!

A couple years back, I had a cold that just wouldn't go away. I finally went to a doctor when I just couldn't stay awake during the day while watching DS. I had bronchitis, pnuemonia, and an ear infection that had busted out my eardrum. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and an inhaler. DH finally took a day or two off work to take care of DS while I got a little better.

I can't imagine a world without antibiotics.

OP, I hope your sister is feeling better soon!

I never get sick and about 3 years ago I had a sore throat and cold that just wouldn't leave either. Like you I waited. Imagine my surprise to find out I had bronchitis, pnuemonia, and an inflamed lung near collapse.
