going on disney wonder in august and was wondering since my daughter has a bad habit of breaking the wires on her braces at least once a week , if there is anywhere either while were at our disney portion or our cruise portion if she breaks them where she might get them fixed and how much extra money i need to bring to have them fixed, thanks just planning ahead

EEEK! During one of our previous cruises, a member of our traveling party needed to visit the hospital in St. Maarten and St. Thomas, and let me tell you, they were definitely not up-to-par with US facilities. Knowing that, I doubt that you will be able to find a decent place on either island that will be able to fix your daughter's braces.

Do they have to be fixed whent hey break? Or can she go a few days with a loose wire?

:D Maybe you will get lucky and there will be an orthadontist on the same cruise as you. I'm sure there wouldn't be any trouble finding one while at WDW. They are very helpful in finding things or places you need to find, just ask the front desk. Good Luck. Our daughter just got hers so we still have all that to look forward to. :smooth:

I have braces too and when I travel, I bring along several packages of the Wax that can smooth things out.

Once during an 'emergency' I twisted the wire out by myself until I could get back to my Orthodontist, but basically, I just put wax on everything. It can even hold a loose wire in place when necessary.

Hi, our dd has broken her wire a couple of times at camp and such and this is her orthos home fixer upper til you get to the next appt (where you are not near an ortho of course). Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think there are several different size wires and brackets and different orthos use different ones so they cant always work on what you have.

Use fingernail clippers to cut the broken wire as short as possible. If you end up with the whole wire out, that is fine til you can get to the office. Any sharp end that is left, just like the previous poster said, WAX is the answer :) Never leave home without it. And, also bring some orajel or whatever your kiddo prefers in case when the wire breaks the inside of the mouth gets scraped up a bit.

The thing thats made the biggest difference with our dd and the amount of emergency visits she has required with brackets and stuff is cutting up her food into tiny tiny pieces. She hasnt had any problems since she started doing that.

Heres hoping you have a great trip :)

After reading this, I'm assuming there is no Dentist on board. Am I correct?

Also, talk to your orthodontist about your concerns. We made MANY last minute trips to fix broken wires and loose bands! Finally got tired of that, and I let him know that I wanted some time to talk to him at her next regular appointment.

Cutting food up very small and eating only small bites at a time helped the most. Also, my orthodontists philosophy is to do a fix yourself until you get back to him. He said if we are on vacation - snip any wires we need to to make her comfortable! I bought a very small, sharp pair of wire cutters and plyers for just such an emergency and take them on every trip.

Just happened to ds in January on the Wonder! I, too, never travel without a small pair of wire cutters (used just for my unlicensed emergency orthodontia work :) ) I just cut the offending wire as close as possible to the last intact bracket. Our orthodontist says this is fine with him, as "there is nothing you can do that we can't fix."

thanks everyone i feel a little bit better, i'll make sure i have a lot of wax, with us, and thanks to all for all the wonderful suggestions. it sure helps a nervous mama!!!!
