My DD5 broke her arm this past weekend and will be in a cast when we are at DL in 3 weeks. (We arrive on Mar 20 and leave Mar 26, DH, DD5, DD2 and I are so excited, but now hoping the cast/arm doesnt cause any issues)

2 questions:
1. Can characters, mainly princesses, sign her cast if she asks?
2. Should we avoid any rides since her cast can't get wet? Or are we better off carrying a plastic bag around with us and use it to wrap her arm?

Any other suggestions to make this trip a little better for her?

Thanks.

Having had a broken arm about 1000yrs ago, watch closely for Splash Mountain and the Matterhorn. (if it's open) As for autographs, take a felt tipped pen with you. It never hurts to ask. :confused3

I've heard characters are reluctant or not allowed to sign objects that are being 'worn' like signing a t-shirt.

There are not too many 'wet' rides in DL beyond splash mountain that I can recall. There is a little water at the end of Matterhorn and Thunder Mt RR. but its more for effect than getting you wet IMO.

Can they do a waterproof cast? I've never had anything casted, but I've heard of waterproof casts on the Dis.

Splash, Pirates, Grizzly...I've gotten heavily splashed on each of them! So if the waterproof cast doesn't work, I would definitely cover it up. Don't forget if it rains!

Our dd was older when she went with a broken arm to WDW and we just used a plastic bag to cover it on wet rides with no problems.

If she hasn't had the final cast put on yet (when my DS7 broke his arm last year they waited a week for casting due to swelling) definitely ask about gortex lining. My son was able to shower and even swim with the cast! It wasn't covered by insurance but only cost approx $30 and was worth every penny!

Have a great trip! She should be fine with the cast, I know my son was trying to play soccer within a few days even though his cast went from hand to shoulder!

I don't know if the policy is different at Disneyland but a few years ago my DS broke him arm right before a Disney World trip. The characters all gladly signed his cast, it was Star Wars Weekend and he got all those signatures too. He's in the pre show pic below, using his left hand because the right one was in a bright green cast (but hidden under his costume here!).

I know it's an expense but I bought the swim dry cast from this site and it worked great, DS was able to swim while there too. I think the directions said something about not fully submerging his arm, but he was 9 and did anyway - stayed dry.

Have a great time!

Thanks for all the good ideas. I never thought about a water-proof cast. I will ask this morning when she goes in for her cast. I will make sure I bring a plastic bag though just in case.

Bring a roll of tape, you will be able to tape the bag over the cast where it ends, securing it closed and making it less "baggy"...you will need to do this for showering as well...it's pretty easy. (Both my sons have broken their arms, so I have a lot of experience!) I used easy-tear packing tape.

Of course if you get a waterproof cast (not always an option depending on the type of break, I think), you won't have to worry.

We actually brought oldest son to Disneyland to celebrate after he got his cast OFF in 2005...it was a long and painful recovery for him (three casts, two surgeries, 10 weeks).

PS After all that, I think the trip was for MOM, too :rotfl:

Another tip (that I have thankfully not had to use): If you want to save the character signatures on the cast (or just from friends), have the doctor draw a marker "cut line" where he will be removing the cast later. That way no one's signature gets cut in half!

Best of luck!
