Broken ankle on DD13

Alrighty, first let me say you folks are great on this site, thanks for the tips.

The good news not a break (therefore no surgery). Its a very bad sprain, looking at the bruising so far its worse than I have ever had so its a doozy, and I have a hunch that she will not be fully up and running in the next 10 days. This is our second trip, but our first during a busy season. If needed we will grab the wheelchair and use that. I hope she will be ok for the waterparks as well...

So, manythanks to a reckless soccer opponent, we have a child with a broken ankle. How screwed is our trip going to be? We were to be flying out on the 28th. There is no way she will be walking without crutches by then...
you can buy a wheel chair for the price to rent one then donate it to charity for $90 bucks. We did that in November for my daughter.

I once broke my foot right after checking into my Disney resort, and despite my thinking the trip was screwed it totally wasn't. Wheelchair plus sticking to a regimen on painkillers (take them on a schedule instead of waiting until it hurts; preventing pain is easier than getting rid of it) saved the day. We probably went at a slower pace than we might have otherwise, but it was still awesome. When renting a wheelchair, ask about a clip to hold her crutches on it.

My DD13 (thanks to a very poorly timed slide) had a very nasty sprain last summer. She was in a boot for several weeks. If we'd been doing Disney, I feel sure she'd have needed a wheelchair for much of the time. I'd just have a plan for that in my pocket. I know mine could not have done a waterpark two weeks after--steps to climb, getting in/out of water, etc. (And mine is really tough as nails, but it was bad.). My only other advice is 1) ask the doc about wrapping it during the day to help with swelling and 2) pack lots of Ziplocs so you can ice whenever you need. Good luck with your trip and with her recovery (and PT if needed). Mine still plays in a brace a year later "just in case!"

I would see about an ECV - saw several younger kids using them at the parks when we were there in september.
The Disney parks and most of the off-site rental companies will not rent for use by someone under 18. Not letting someone under 18 use it is part of the rental contract, so someone who signed the rental contract and lets their child drive it has violated their contract.

I know Randy's will sometimes rent for use by an older child after meeting with them. Another poster put that Walker will do the same - I had not heard that. Since both Walker and Randy's have to meet with the renter since they are not Preferred Vendors, that would give opportunity to meet and assess the user.

Well its official now.....full cast.. :( Something is broken but ot showing up on the xray. Wheelchair rental for sure!

I think I said Walker but I meant Randy's. Sorry for any confusion!

So so

So sorry to hear that!! People kept telling us "oh a sprain is so much worse than a break--a break heals easier..." That sounds like BS to me (and I'll bet to the girl who can't take that cast OFF like a boot!), but maybe it will prove true. I'm sure the characters will make a fuss over her, and hopefully it won't keep her from doing many of her favorite rides. Hope you guys can still have a great trip. Please report back in case any of us end up in the same situation--it could easily happen with my two! Good luck :)

1. Disney, and with the exception of Randy's Mobility, nobody will rent a power scooter (ECV/Electric Convenience Vehicle) to anyone under 18. And Randy's will only rent one to an older teen who normally uses one and they have do a test drive.

2. In addition, you might want to talk to the person who will be removing the cast. Have a line drawn on the cast where it will be cut for removal. Then bring along some "Sharpies" and have the characters autograph the cast, asking them to make sure their signature does not directly cross the line.

Once the cast is removed and fully dried out, you will then have a very unusual souvenir of the trip.

3. Go to the disABILITIES Form for much more information.

Just something to think about...we traveled with a young teen in a wheelchair for a different reason. We chose to rent from home so that we had the wheelchair in the airport. Ended up much cheaper than anything we could find in Orlando. With a prescription, might even get covered by insurance. I work orthopedics and most teens go back to school using a wheelchair.
