I want to make Broccoli Salad for bunco tomorrow night and have found several recipes online. Most call for mayonaisse and sugar for the dressing. I have a bottle of coleslaw dressing in my pantry and wonder if that will work for this dish. I'm thinking it would be easier anyway. Any thoughts?

My recipe calls for mayo, sugar & vinegar...which is basically what I use for coleslaw anyway. If it's easier for you, I think you're safe using it. Why not just check it by dipping a small piece of broccoli in the dressing & tasting it? That should give you an idea of whether or not you'll like it.

good idea. I was trying for the way sweet tomatoes makes it. raisins, sunflower seeds, red onion. Do you put cheese in yours? some recipes have it and some don't. Is it best to make it tonight and let it sit?

I use coleslaw dressing for my broccoli along with dried cranberries and chopped pecans. It is really good. Just don't put too much or it is a little tart.

I've been using broccoli, celery (sometimes), bacon, Craisins & sunflower seeds with the mayo, sugar & vinegar dressing. I'm allergic to onions, so I've never put them in. But I do remember the original recipe I had included cheese. Honestly, I'm not crazy about it that way so I skipped it...too much fat that way anyway. ;)

And for me, tart wouldn't be a bad thing. LOL I'm not overly fond of things being too sweet. I'm PA Dutch & love the sweet/sour taste...but our family always made things a lot more tart I guess. Usually red beet (pickled) eggs & 3 bean salad taste awful from a restaurant in Lancaster County! Too much sugar! :teeth:

I do have some craisins at home, maybe I'll use them instead, they'll be prettier than raisins. Thanks!

Should I make it tonight if I'm not serving it until 7pm tomorrow or wait? I really like this salad but have never made it myself.

Sorry - I missed that part of the question before. While I like the flavor the next day a bit better, I think it isn't really as attractive the 2nd day. It's hard to explain, but I can usually tell you if it's fresh or not. It gets a bit....glossy looking...for lack of a better way to describe it. :confused3 I'd wait.

Thank you for all your help! I will wait to make it until tomorrow. I was thinking it might look a little wilted but wasn't sure. Thanks again.

I am sooooo glad I tried the coleslaw dressing before I dumped it on the bowl full of broccoli! I guess it 's the brand, but I didn't like it at all, maybe it's because I bought the reduced fat kind, ha ha..

I made it with light mayo (all that I had in the house) and vinegar and sugar and it's very tasty. Thanks!
