As a member, how many people can I bring up guests to the Top of the World lounge at BLT, and can my wife bring up the same amount?... Or is it a total number by membership?

My wife and I will be with 6 people that aren't members.

Thanks!

From the Member website:
"Disney Vacation Club Members staying at any Disney-owned-and-operated hotel at Walt Disney World Resort (whether they booked with Vacation Points or cash) may enjoy access one of the vacation kingdom's most exclusive spaces: Top of the World Lounge atop Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort through December 29, 2018.

Blockout dates apply for Top of the World Lounge, including but not limited to: December 30 — 31, 2017; July 3 — 4, 2018; and December 30 — 31, 2018. Current operating hours are 6:00 PM to midnight.

People who are in that Member's traveling party and staying on that Member's reservation are also eligible to visit Top of the World Lounge. At least one Member in the traveling party must accompany the group and present his or her current MagicBand or card in order to gain admission to the lounge and observation deck. A Disney Vacation Club Membership Card is also required to verify Membership."

Are they staying in your villa with you? They need to be listed on your reservation.

You can bring up the people that are staying on your reservation.

Assuming it is a quieter night, do they actually check that closely? I know that you can't say "I'm in a studio, taking up 20 people", but doesn't it benefit Disney to have more people up there, as long as they are in the "in" crowd? The lounge is kept open due to drink and food sales, so the more sales, the better it is for them.
From what I have seen, a guest scans their magic band, and then tells the person at the desk how many guests they have. There hasn't been any checking of those guests' magic bands.
I'm sure things are different on busy nights where space is tight, but I can understand Disney's motivation for being lax on the implementation of their own guidelines.

On the one hand, I be you’d get up pretty easily with a couple extra people who aren’t on your reservation, but not because Disney wants more food and beverage revenue. I doubt they check too closely. But the rule seems more geared towards creating an exclusive environment to increase DVC sales.
