Bringing a laptop?

DH loves his laptop and is thinking about bringing it with us. (this is in addition to our phones and my tablet.) I am trying to talk him out of it. I would venture to guess that the in room safes are not big enough to hold a laptop.

(Are there safes in the rooms at WDW? Is this still a thing?)

Does anyone else bring your laptop or do you rely on getting your information from a phone or tablet?
If you do bring a laptop, how do you secure it in your room while you are out and about?

Which resort? What size laptop?

I don't think the safes are all the same size.

Can't help as everywhere on property I have stayed the safe has been big enough for my laptop. I have to bring mine sometimes so I can work when not in the park and so I'm pretty familiar with them. Depending on the safe you either stand it up on its side or lay it flat just depends if it is one of the in wall safes or one of the box safes.

Our safe at BC was big enough to hold a laptop standing on its side. That being said I kept mine in a drawer as I have in dozens of hotels all over the country without problem although I should probably be more careful. I also have a lock (which I never use) which would work if there was no safe.

It may or may not fit.
I bring my tablet and my sister brings her laptop.
We just put our electronics out of sight and have not ad an issue.

You're at Poly, right? A laptop should fit in the safe there unless it's just a monster laptop. The safe is easy to operate, you set up a 4 digit code.

I bring our array of Apple products, but no laptop, although frankly try not to touch any of them when there. Too much of that IRL! :rotfl:

Haven't stayed at Disney resorts yet but we always bring our laptops with us on vacation. It's just so much easier to look up stuff on there rather than on a tablet or a phone (ETA: of course this is for planning purposes, things to do places to eat when we're in the room). My husband, when traveling for work, brings his work laptop too.

We've never had any issues with theft in any hotel room we've stayed at.

That being said prior to leaving the room any actual valuables (like tablets, computers, kindles, etc) is put away out of sight. I tend to put them in my suitcase.

We are doing a triple split stay between Poly, YC, and AKL. Sounds like the safes may be big enough. If not we will lock in the suitcase. Thanks for the tips, all!!

I bring a laptop when my work duties will require me to need one. It varies on each trip if they will or won't
DH always brings his since he feels a need to balance the check book while gone, for reasons I can't even begin to understand or explain
We neither one lock it up. We both slide them back in our carry on bag. Never worried about locking things away

TSA precheck or global entry will solve your 'drag it out' problem also.

Thanks, this made me smile.

There is another consideration.... please bear with me....

My dear wife and I USED to take a standard Windows 7 laptop to WDW. Being a laptop, we had to deal with TSA "pull out the laptop", or put the laptop in our CHECKED bag (legal, but the bag always got searched).

We stopped all this silliness two years ago. We now carry a Lenovo Android notebook, with aux keyboard, about 10" screen. This falls JUST under the TSA "drag it out" size.

1) We do not have to "drag it out" in our carry on bag.
2) I can use Remote desktop (Android App) to get to my HOME Win7 server.
3) I can monitor all home security systems with IP cam viewer.
4) I can get to all Banks, and CC sites with Chrome for Android.

This is a fairly CHEAP Android Laptop - size flys just under TSA radar. Yes, a little slower, but it works PERFECTLY as a vacation computer.

Now - room safes. I can only speak for BRV at the WL: Room safes are GREAT for cash, passports, a couple of other small items. Jamming an android notebook, let alone a laptop, into one? I don't think so. So (all advice?) - carry what works for you, toss it into a dresser drawer, and be happy :). We have never, in over 24 trips, had a issue with anyone trying to steal either a laptop, or a notebook.
At least in May some airports were making people take out anything larger than a cell phone and put it in a separate bin....just like a laptop. This was also at some security lanes but not all to add to the unknown factor. I don't know if this still is going on.

Around that same time my own airport was making people take out any paper you had in your carry on (and yeah they meant any paper). I imagine the business people at that time must have been annoyed. I don't know if they are still doing this though.

These were the airports in May having you take out the larger than cell phone thing:

Again I don't know if this is still going on. But my point is unfortunately there is no guarantees and things can change in a moment's notice.

I just always lock anything I don't want really walking away in my suitcase and hope for the best. I have never had any issues in any hotel if I leave devices out and I have stayed in some shady places with my work.
I only use the safes for cash and jewelry if I take any.

Our safe at BC fit two laptops in (on their side, both Apple). I have to bring mine with me when I travel in case something comes up with work. I don't remember the safe at Poly from a recent trip, but the safe at POR in 2015 was too small; I just locked it in my suitcase without a problem.

I work in IT, so I travel with a big pile of expensive electronics. Sometimes multiple laptops, if it's a business trip. I just put everything in a locked suitcase in the closet during the day. Never had anything stolen in any hotel, in 30 years of business and leisure travel.

Same here - husband and I usually take 3 laptops to WDW - 2 for work and 1 personal - we work in IT - we are DVC do we don't get Mousekeeping daily...we just leave our PCs out and put the Do Not Disturb placard up and have never had a problem..
