What kind of gifts do you give at a bridal shower?

Was there a theme mentioned? The shower my sisters threw, they had a kitchen theme - they asked for recipes and kitchen stuff to be given, all that I registered for and lots that I didn't.

If no theme is mentioned, I would try to find one of the less expensive things on the reigstry - I spend $20-30 on showers. If there's no registry, well, what do they need? Kitchen-y stuff? Camping stuff?

It all depends. Do the couple live together? Do either of them live on there own. If it is a young couple just starting out I try to give a very practical gift, something that will be used every day or quite a bit. I don't usually give the crystal items that may be on the list where they have registered.

Usually the bride has registered at a department store for things on a "wish list". I just pick something off her list in the price range I am planning on paying. If she's not registered it's alot harder. I crochet, so I have given hand crocheted afghans as gifts too.

I always give lingerie at bridal showers.

If the bride is registered then I pick something from the list to give at the wedding. If she isn't registered then I just give cash.

I normally go with glass items. I love beautiful glass vases, it's the sort of thing that will fit in with anyone's decor so I don't have to worry about it not being their taste. I normally go with something pretty simple in style too. A girl I work with said the first thing she noticed she didn't have when she moved out on her own was vases. It's pratical too :D

Either something off the registry or a gift certificate to a store where they are registered at.
Actually my last shower I gave money because besides the "registered" cards that were in the invitation there was also a "greenback" card. Plus the shower was cancelled and then back on so I didnt bother running around getting a gift.

I usually give towels. I had a motto "you can never be too rich, too thin, or have too many towels" and everyone could count on them from me.

Lately though, I've borrowed an idea I saw at a friends shower. Christmas decorations and ornaments, especially if the couple has lived with their parents. The friend who got this married into a Disney loving family, and her future SIL bought a bunch of stuff at the store in DTD.

I always give the Miracle Blade 3 knive set at bridal showers. They all seem to love them. I order the butcher block and cutting board to make it a nice set. I love mine, and I've gotten so many thanks afterwards. They are great knives. I order them online.

there was also a "greenback" card.
Should I even ask what this is? You can ask for cash as a present now and not sound tacky?

My DH and I lived together and had a house before we married. A family friend gave me a gift certificate shower. It was great. I received gift certificates for so many different places and had a blast picking out stuff. I got them for Victoria Secret, restaurants, Macy's, kitchen stores, local department stores, etc. We really enjoyed shopping and then eating out with the certificates.

I was a little surprised by this too. They had all those little cards in the envelope that say the couple is registered at ...Macys, Target, Sears, etc... but there was also one that looked like it was printed on a computer, it had $$$ on it and said Greenback.

LOL...so much for asking for cash and not being tacky about it, that is just unreal, I've never heard of anything like that.

When I was a poor college student and our roommates started getting married we would put together a basket with a complete meal. Spaghetti sauce, different kinds of pasta, Italian bread, a boxed dessert, Welch's sparkling grape juice....plus some fun extras, like silly glasses, placemats, napkins/rings, a gift certificate for movies....It was so much fun and all of the couples looked forward to having a nice quiet night in the middle of all the chaos preparing for the wedding.

Just as something they're interested in. I was trying to think of more examples, but my brain was blanking. My sister had a friend who had all the house stuff already, so asked for camping supplies for wedding/shower presents instead. It was what they were interested in.

I always get something off the registery.

For my future SIL's shower (Saturday) I got her pots & pans and a cutlery set. :)

I always get something from the registry if they have one. I figure, why get somebody something that you are not sure that they will like. The registry is a sure thing - ESPECIALLY if you don't know the bride very well.

My Mother did something I always thought was neat. (of course those were the days before people lived together before they got married) As soon as she knew a close friend or family member was engaged, every week she would buy a diffeent spice or herb until she had a big box full. Natutally I was the one who got to wrap each one indiviually. Other times she would by a big laundry basket and fill it with dish towels, cleaning supplies, a feather duster, sponges and a mop. She always said those were the little things a young couple would have to go out and buy after they set up housekeeping.

Oh my gosh -- I totally forgot my favorite gift!

Are you ready?

Laundry detergent!!

A friend of mine wrote a little thingie (I can't find it! :( ) that was something like this:

As you enter this new (#1), you and your (#2) will find great (#3).

#1 was Era detergent
#2 was a bottle of honey
#3 was Cheer detergent

It was awesome - I wish I had the whole thing to post. I would just read it, then open the present. If you're creative, you should be able to come up with a little something using general household products. It's been over 18 months since that shower and I'm finally on my last bottle of detergent!
