Breyer horses and playsets

My 9 year old daughter is suddenly into anything that has to do with horses, and likes the Breyer horses and playsets. All she wants for Christmas are toy horses and the tack that goes with them. I didn't realize they are so expensive! Does anyone know where I can get some deals on Breyer playsets? Are there any "knock off" brands that are less expensive! I did find a knockoff of the Breyer Barn. She doesn't have any horses yet, so what must haves should we give her to start her collection? Thanks for your help!

Stephanie - I'm not sure how much of a deal you can find on Breyer horses and playsets but a good place to purchase them is through backinthesaddle.com. I always get them there. If I'm not mistaken they even have other "knockoff" types ones (cheaper) on the site too.

I can't help you with where to find them but I do know the ones that I got as a child are almost collectors items now, so you may want to tell her to be careful with them and keep them very nice, otherwise buy the knockoffs.I loved these horses as a child and still have several in my attic. I remember my very favorite was an old plow horse and of course the Arab since that is what I had. They are beautiful creations!

http://www.hearthsong.com has a whole horse section. Tons of really neat horse toys. Just search "Horse" and "Pony" and see what you get. Not a TON cheaper but it is all cheaper and just as neat. They have other things too like a Horse bed tent, Horse play rug (like the train/car ones for boys), horse jewelry box, etc. Really cool stuff. I have a horse lover too

Just as a note (having raised a horse lover), you might want to check into Young Rider magazine. It would make a great stocking stuffer, and I'm pretty sure she'd love it. We took it for many years.

My two step-daughters are very much into Breyers horses now. I swear I had nothing to do with it! Hee hee.

But when I was young a had a HUGE collection. I moved them around from house to house when I got older. Finally I sold them on Ebay. Not knowing what they were worth I listed the entire collection for $50, just to get them out of my hair.

People bid and bid on them and I finally sold them for $475.00!

However, in hindsight, I would have SAVED a lot of money had I known I would have met and married a man with little girls like me!

do you have a Tuesday Morning - or similar discounter, like Marshall's - near you? I have run into some good finds at these places - of course, you can not count on finding any specific item, but if you are willing to check these places from time to time - you can find Breyer items.

Santa brought DDs 8 & 5 the stable, rug and several horses from HearthSong last year. They have really enjoyed the stable and horses, don't have much to do with the rug (but it looks nice). My mom found a similar, somewhat smaller stable at her Sam's Club and paid about 1/2 what I did. My only advice.....if she's going to actually play with the horses, I would recommend buying something other than the really expensive Breyer, etc. since sometimes their feet and tails break off. But for collecting and displaying in a little horse lover's room....you can't beat Breyer!
